Murray suffers early exit
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:53:40 PM »
Andy Murray was defeated in the second round of the Kremlin Cup this afternoon with a tame performance against Janko Tipsarevic. The young Serbian got revenge for his defeat in the first round of last week's Moselle open in Metz this afternoon by winning 6-4, 7-5.
Murray started the match slowly saving six break points in the first set, however Tipsarevic took his opportunity at 3-3 and that single break saw him to take the set 6-4. The second set began with more solid play from Andy. However, he ultimately failed to take advantage of his numerous set points and Tipsarevic finally broke to take the set and the match in just under two hours.
Murray's petulant, and players now know they can beat him by getting him to self-destruct.

Andy will no doubt be disappointed with this performance given the opportunities he created for himself to level the match in the later stages of the second set. On the other hand, this exit does give Andy the opportunity to rest and look ahead to the Madrid Masters next week.

First against Robredo and now against Tipsy? Murray is suffering mental break downs half way through matches and it's got to stop!

We're used to the mid set wobble but I still thoroughly expected him to break back for the set at 5-4. That would be typical Murray. This is just wrong. I feel cheated out of a third set!

Absolutely, I did not expect this at all! But now it's getting to the stage where we will be expecting it.
Either Murray has got to fix himself or Brad has got to go.

I don't think we can blame Brad here. You're being a little drastic and allowing Fuzzy to influence your thinking. Remember, he did make the final last week. This is the most he's played in such a short time in a good while. He had has some good wins in the last fortnight. He did play some of his best tennis to take that 6-0 set on Sunday and this is a tough opponent we did think Andy would struggle against last week. It was ridiculous the way Andy lost that set just now but it's happened, learn, move on. We've got a couple of Masters to look forward to now. So let's do that.
You've got to remember this is totally typical young inexperienced behaviour. Agassi did it, Federer did it, Henman did it. Let's hope Andy'll experience their learning curve.

Yes, a disappointing loss - but it happens; practically every player on the tour has unexpected early round losses. It's clear that Murray is rusty but I don't think there's any reason to panic.

i totally agree. Murray has still to mature in his game so its inevitable there will be these lapses. Its also hard after his long lay off with injury

I really do hope it's his injury lay off rather than his general mental strength.

Perhaps if he'd won the final against Robredo, he's have had enough confidence for this match. Anyway, time to move on. Every player has a period of struggling in his career.

Oh dear
Not the result we expected, not even Fuzzy could save the day.
As Dana says, move on, next tournie.

On the subject of mental strength though, remember that this is the player who, when he didn't have the physical strength to get through 4 and 5 setters, never ever stopped fighting. This is just a glitch. I hope.

Exactly, a guy who had the mental strength to close out against world no 1, a guy who had the mental strength to fight to a win over Gonzalez in 5 sets when he looked dead and burried, a guy who had the mental strength to win in straight sets over Andy Roddick on grass having faced numerous break points and a guy who dug deep to beat Tommy Haas (an on form one at that) having sustained a pretty painful injury that very match. He believed he could beat Nalbandian his first Wimbledon and he almost did it. He believed he could beat Nadal and he really should have. His confidence took a good knock on Sunday, today won't have helped. But just a couple more big wins and he'll be back on track.
