Andy Murray progressed to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters, after a tough and tense encounter against big serving Croat, Ivo Karlovic. The British number one survived a barrage of aces and service winners, to prevail after two hours and twenty minutes, in a 7-6 6-7 6-3 victory.

With fabulous shot-making and focused tactics, Andy conquered ferocious serving from the Croatian in a game that probably saw more breaks of serve than Karlovic will face in any other match this year. Andy restricted Karlovic to a tame eleven aces, this from a man who has already hit 182 this year.

Despite Murray suffering an early break in both the first and second sets, he showed why many regard him as one of the best returners in the game by breaking Karlovic to bring both sets to a tie break. With Murray sealing the first and Karlovic stealing the second, this match would go to a deciding set.

The third set saw Karlovic lose his way slightly in the opening games and Andy flew to a 3-0 lead. However, briefly abandoning the serve-volley that had worked so well for him, Andy was broken back at 4-2 and the match was back on serve. Yet, the following game would see him produce two of the best forehands of the match and he was given the chance to serve for the match. Closing out with a tricky drop shot, the British number one booked his place in the fourth round against Tommy Haas.

Murray unhappy with his attitude
Speaking after the match, Andy commented on his mentallity on court.

I was disappointed with my attitude during the match, I was getting really angry and I haven't done that this year,

I was just in a bad frame of mind and you can sometimes snap out of it, but when you're playing someone who is as frustrating to play against as him, it's difficult.

I was just happy with the way I came through in the end because I was not focusing as well as I should have been.

However, BBC 5 live's David Law says that this realisation from Andy makes this a very exciting result.

I sense this was actually a more valuable win for Murray than just reaching the fourth round,

He's obviously a perfectionist but in berating himself for his failings, things just seemed to get worse.

The fact that he realises that now is surely a positive and if he can keep his temper against Haas, a quarter-final against Federer is surely a possibility.

I'm pretty sure he got very angry recently, did he not?

Nope. Actually in Dubai I would have probably preferred an angry Andy cause he was so passive. He needed to get himself wound up. He explains it a little more in the rest of what he says. It's all about being the perfectionist. It's here if you're curious.

Sadly a lot of the articles on the Murray/Karlovic match use the words 'bad tempered'.

He's getting some bad press about this and some of the people I know are getting very fed-up/embarrassed by him and no longer support him.

What a shame.

I like it when he gets angry. It's passionate and exciting. Unlike Mr passive-I-couldn't-care-less we've been getting recently. Although I do love Mr calm and controlled like he was against Fed. That works equally as well. Just as long as he doesn't end up like Gonzalez who self destructs, I'll be happy!

You make a good point about Gonzo self-destructing and one of the points raised in various conversations I've had recently has been about exactly that.  Is he, Murray, going to spiral out of control and as you say 'self destruct'.  There's a fine line.  Also, his language is causing a lot of offense - I cannot imagine it will be tolerated at Wimbledon.

Well it's not but he does it anyway. It has toned down recently though.

I didn't think he was that bad tempered last night. I mean, he got annoyed for silly shots, but I've seen him in worse states certainly...

Me too. Although Petch thinks it's more to do with him losing his concentration and getting frustrated at his mistakes inside his head than an actual outward reaction.
