Murray threatens to quit tennis « on: May 04, 2008, 01:06:30 AM »

Andy Murray has revealed he will retire from professional tennis unless he gets back into the top-10.

The shocking comments, delivered at Barcelona's Real Club de Tenis, are likely to scare British tennis and especially his fans.

I don't really want to play tennis if I am not going to try and be around the top guys in the world. If I don't feel I can do it, then I will stop. I don't think there is much fun in me playing the game otherwise.

Last year I surely would have finished in the top 10 [he was 11th] but for injuries. I was just one match away from qualifying for the [year-end] Masters Cup, even though I missed three and a half months of the season because of my back and wrist. So, yeah, I definitely feel I can get up to the top 10 again.

I have beaten Roger Federer this year, I have had some good matches with Rafael Nadal. Bar Novak Djokovic [who he has yet to defeat] I have a good record against top players like Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko.

Murray comments on his progress with Corretja on clay
I am going to have to work on a lot more things before I can say I am a very good clay-court player. I am not anywhere near there yet. I am getting better but there are still a lot of improvements I have to make.

I just wanted to work with someone through the clay-court stretch because I hadn't had a chance to play any matches on clay for a long time. I don't plan on hiring anyone else for the grass.

The Scot responds to criticism over the size of his coaching team
I think it has kind of been blown out of proportion, the amount of people I have around me. I just want to have a coach, a physio and a fitness trainer at each of the tournaments to make sure that, unlike last year when I had a bad injury, I can prevent that.

That's why I have got a physio with me. I hear all the time that I am not in good shape and need to improve my stamina, so I have hired a fitness trainer. But, suddenly, I have got too many people around me. So it's one of those things. I made a decision to try and improve all the things I am not doing well and suddenly there seem to be way too many people at the tournament.

Over the last couple of years I have had a lot of people questioning my fitness. Now I feel much stronger because I hired a fitness trainer. I hired a physio to prevent some of the injuries I had in the last couple of years and I have not had any real niggles this year that have kept me out for any period of time. So I feel the things off court I wanted to improve on, I have done.

Fans may at least feel some comfort in that such a bold statement could suggest Murray remains hungry for success regardless of recent criticism to the contrary.

This is ultimately positive news and it's nice to finally hear him speak his mind again as we haven't had much of that as of late.

What!!!! shocking

I dunno, sounds like an excuse to give up just because he isn't getting his own way at the moment.

This either could be interpreted as a quiter's attitude or that he is trying to put a message across that he is still hungry for match victories which some of us have doubted after his recent performances.

No surprises here. Murray has made a fortune and does not seem sufficiently driven to succeed on the pro tour. I'd say this confirms that he will be out of tennis in a couple of years absolute max.

It's a realistic take on what he has said. He's laying the groundwork for leaving the game. I think he knows he hasn't got a consistent enough game to be a top player, and the frustration is making him hate tennis.

I think that it's a shame that he feels this way and who know's what's around the corner - unless you know better?

Mod NoticeThis post was considered overly aggressive and insulting and also potentially said to bait people to respond in an insulting and angry way.

it all sounds a bit vague... he doesn't give any indication of how long he is prepared to wait until he actually gives up. if he cant defend his points from year to year then he will invariably keep dropping out of the top ten.

there doesn't seem to be much consistency in what he's saying. after he lost to ancic he was talking about getting to rome where all the good players were playing, but if he cant get beyond the third round then what he said is pointless

id love to optimistic but i cant see him beating nadal on clay. it will just be another set back and another missed opportunity to gain points.

he certainly needs to grow up a bit for a start

Sounds as if you're all giving up on him. Everything he says and does just at the moment seems to bring negative criticism - he's 20 years old for heavens sake - of course he wants to be the best - until his wrist injury he was well on the way. This last year his confidence for one has taken a tumble - is anyone beating Nadal on clay at the moment? I haven't seen to many successes against him - even the great Novac doesn't make much impression. I can understand him not wanting to continue if he is just going to remain on the fringe of the best - he wants to be up there competing successfully against the best. Novac and Rafa are early at their best - not everyone is made that way - give him a chance!  Or am I just an old optimist!!! confused confused confused

Have just found out that he will probably be playing Rafa in the third round if he gets through the first two.  Surely he won't be condemned for losing that one - no-one seems to beat him at the moment. It will help him immensely if he gets that far and has a repeat of last year's Aussie Open match with Nadal - that was a corker!!

Even if he is beaten by Nadal (if he gets that far) he still gains points that could improve his ranking. If Andy gave him a good match, even if he ultimately lost, I'd still see that as very positive.

Regarding his "I might quit" comments, I sincerely hope he's saying "the fact that I'm here playing means I believe I can be with the best" rather than "in the back of my mind I'm planning for failure".

Either way, there's something that would help him, that he should be able to count on from anyone who calls themself a fan.

Hmm, I think him saying "Ohhh what's the point" like a miserable little teenager, he's got amazing talent, and there's players who continue to play despite not even making the top 100. I think he's really unappreciative to turn around and say that, when there's thousands in the world who would kill for a top 20 spot, nevermind a top 10.

One of the factors that is attracting such negativity is that he is making these comments when he is 20 years old, that's far too early to be talking abuot the end of your career. Can you imagine if Federer had the same attitude? He woudn't be here, he would have quit before he got good.

You guys are all over the top! All he was saying was that he's not interested in playing if he cannot play at the really top level, i.e. top 10. What's wrong with that? The opposite, he's saying he's not just your average tennis player, who's in it for the money - he's playing because he wants to be winning, and if he can't he wouldn't be playing.
The title of this thread is also very sensationalist. He's not 'threatening' to quit, just explaining why he's in the game.
