Murray to threaten Fed's dominance « on: November 24, 2007, 12:13:10 PM »

Andy Murray is in the leading pack that will be able to challenge Roger Federer next season, former world no-1 Pete Sampras has claimed.

Sampras thinks that if Murray can deal with his injuries, then he can threaten the Fed's dominance at the top of world tennis. Other names included in the chasing group were Nadal, Djokovic, Ferrer, and perhaps surprisingly given his end of season form, Davydenko.

I think Andy has a lot of potential. He has had to deal with some injuries but he is part of a crew that can threaten Roger.

Roger is still the man to beat but it is possible.

The question is, how long will it be before Federer falls? Let us know what you think - take it to the forums!

11 meetings in 5 years, 11 wins for Federer... Davydenko's only won 4 sets... what's going to change now?

Murray has to consistently beat the likes of Nadal and Djokovic before he even thinks about threatening Federer's dominance. A long way to go.

Andy definitely can be a true threat to Federer. As much as some nonbelievers say that Federer was just tired when Andy beat him in 2006, most players might have come to close to defeating a tired Federer, but still not finish the job, but Andy did. He beat Federer by getting every ball back and playing his trademark tactical game. Nalbandian has always been a threat to Federer and has the ability to hit the ball anywhere and is good at net, which Andy is as well. Plus, if Andy is strong mentally then he can definitely beat Federer on a consistent basis.

Fed was tired. Andy is a very very good player. I've seen him play in person several times in the last two years...... but I only had to see Fed once to know that he was truly awesome. The greatest player I have ever seen in person anyway and I've seen pretty much all of the top 20 in the last two years. Andy has to be playing superbly to beat Federer and even then, if Fed is at his best, Andy will not win. He's not as good, nor will he be for one or two seasons I think, despite his mental state. Fed is AWESOME.

Don't get me wrong, I do not think that Andy will beat Federer in the Slams, but I think he could beat Federer in other ATP tournaments. I know Federer has experience and is definitely the better player. There's no player on tour better than Federer, but I think Andy has that ability to push Federer in matches, even if he doesn't win.

Federer looked dreadfully knackered in that match he lost to Murray but you're right in saying that it takes something special to finish the job against such greatness. I still remember the moment he won though, it was the best moment I've experienced while I've been a supporter of Murray Smile

Beejeasus Mark, your a right misery sometimes, note this, Andy had played more matches running into that tourny than Fed, two more I think, could be more, by rights it should have been Andy that was tired not an in prime fit as a whistle Federer,

That's true geo and for that reason it really isn't a valid excuse but for some reason Federer looked dead and Murray seemed in fairly good shape Think
