Andy Murray is to work with two time French Open finalist and former world number two Alex Corretja. This is to guide Andy through the clay court season beginning in Valencia in a few weeks.
Corretja will work with the current team, Miles Maclagan and physical trainer Matt Little for the two month run that includes the three Master Series events in Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg as well as the French Open.
Andy's thoughts:
It’s great for me to be able to work with a clay court specialist like Alex. He had a fantastic career and I am looking forward to learning from his experiences. Corretja's thoughts:
I have watched Andy play several times over the last couple of years and in particular his close match against Nadal in Madrid in October and saw that he has tremendous potential to play well on all surfaces and I am flattered to have been asked to be part of his team during the clay court season.

Well it's nice to see that someone's awake at Murrays World! This is almost old news.

Maybe this whole team thing is an excusve to try out loads of coaches and then to eventually stick with the best, I hope so anyway.

Sounds promising. I'm not sure Andy's temperament likes to be with anyone too long. Or your idea might be right Mark.

Not quite sure yet, hope results in Valencia will prove me wrong. Alex isnt an aggressive player and plays similar to how Andy plays when he counter punches. I dont think thats the way forward on clay but only time will tell

It must have been okay at some point or Alex wouldn't have got to the French Open final twice. This is a good move on Andys part, picking a coach that is good on one particular surface is a great idea.

It probably was good at the time he got to the final, but tennis now is lot more aggressive, more players are looking to win the point than wait on an opponents error. I think thats why Murray changed against Volandri. To play aggressive and I still believe that is the best I have seen him play. Simply because clay is the slowest court, yet Murray was hitting the ball and Volandri didnt even have a chance to get his racquet on it. It showed how strong he was to hit clear winners from anywhere on the court. Usually players can get some sort of return on clay but it was winner after winner.

Yes, Andy was definitely inspired that day - lets hope he continues where he left off.
