Andy Murray roared to victory in Russia this afternoon, with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Fernando Verdasco in St Petersburg.

The Scot, in his fourth final of the year, demolished his Spanish opponent, collecting his third ATP Title, and his first trophy outside of San Jose.

St PetersburgThe Scot took control of the match from the outset and never let his Spanish opponent find his rhythm. Murray, even with a dismal 33% first serve, managed to take the first set 6-2 with great ease.

I never had any doubt of the result. This now sets Murray up for a great finish to an unlucky season. - netcord (mw member)

Verdasco continued to pose no threat in the second set allowing Murray to take the match, 6-2 6-3.

Speculation is now rife as to whether or not Murray will make the Shanghai Masters. After today's victory he lies at 11th in the race and a place is within his grasp, but everything rests on his performance in Paris next week.

I assumed Murray would beat Verdasco fairly easily but with such a terrible first set, it's pretty surprising. Was Verdasco just crap today?

I didn't assume anything and, I suppose, neither did Andy. This was a solid win against an opponent who was lacking in the kind of guile that others in the top 20 already possess.

Paris is a whole different ball game.

And potentially Djokovic in the third round is the kind of revenge match that should be eaten cold by Andy. He will already be working out the tactics if he gets through the second. An advance to the semis here might well be enough to grab the eighth spot for the Shanghai Masters Cup.

I watched St Petersburg using www.channelsurfing.net and although the streaming quality wasn't brilliant it was good enoughy to show, in conjunction with ATP Live Scoring, how things were going.

Our boy is back to his live and kicking best and there are going to be a few scared guys in the mix from now on.

Probably because this tournament isn't so big? But I know what you mean.

Either way, Murray still has a chance at Shanghai!!

It's not that the tournament isn't big - it offers more prize money than Basel and Lyon. It's just the lack of quality players in it. Maybe its because it's in Russia - I have no idea. What I don't get is that the top players like Ljubo and Roddick played Lyon when St. Petersburg offered more ranking points (albeit a little). The only thing I can think of is that tennis is more important in other countries, fan wise. Because every match in St. petersburg had an audience of about 100 people.
The players want to play in front of their fans and not just the umpire and the ball boys/girls

He's got quite a poor record in finals but great to see another title added to the list. Very Happy

Also, what a cracker of a trophy compared to the phallic San Jose prize. yay

It's actually worth more for Andy than San Jose in points and cash so it should be more exciting!

Verdasco said the conditions at the indoor arena rather than nerves were to blame for his poor start.

"The problem was that not all the lights were on at the start of the match and by the time we had decent lighting I was already a break down," he said.

"It was difficult for me to get the serve back because he was serving very well and was gaining confidence as the match progressed while my confidence was getting low."

Can anyone say sore loser? He knows Murray was playing in the same arena right? With the same number of lights on?

Exactly what I thought. Over on ATP they had him saying he just had a bad day and what have you. In fact here's what it says:

“I lost my confidence in the beginning of the match. I was playing aggressively but making lots of mistakes. It was not easy to regain the confidence during the match. Andy likes to play against players who attack him. He is very good in defending and today he didn't give me many chances. I played well during the week but unfortunately today I didn't have a good day. I was not really playing the game I usually play and I could never manage to find a way to break his serve and get back into the match.

"I really wanted to win today. But everyone have bad days; this is tennis.

But the other stuff was from the BBC and obviously during the post match press stuff.

"I'm definitely very happy about winning this tournament. Now I'm only 3 points behind the No.8 player in the Race. I still have a chance of qualifying to Shanghai. I didn't expect to be in this position after missing nearly four months out of the season.

"I felt quite comfortable during the match today. My opponent had probably one or two chances on my serve but I was playing with a lot of confidence. I played very solid all match long. Verdasco has one of the biggest forehands of the tour and he tried to use that to his advantage. It was tough week for me because I played tough matches on Friday and Saturday but today I was able to win in straight sets.

"St. Petersburg is a great tournament. Everyone hugely supported us all week long. The organization, the hotel, everything was perfect."

Oh, it's always the lights, the balls, the racquet, the weather, the crowd, the umpire, the linesmen, the towels, the food, the drinks, the flowers... I was distracted by the lovely colour of those beautiful roses!!
