Andy Murray has withdrawn from Great Britain's tie against Argentina.

A statement on his official site reads:

Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week’s Davis Cup tie against Argentina due to a recurring strain on his right knee and the need to prevent further injury.

Murray states: “Following the intensive off-season training, my right knee, which has a bipartite patella, started to act up again when I returned from Australia. We had a scan done this week and following discussions with my team, we have decided that it is better not to play in the Davis Cup tie against Argentina."

The statement continues
“I am very disappointed not to be joining my Davis Cup teammates in Buenos Aires because I love playing for my country and have always enjoyed the team atmosphere of the Davis Cup. Since returning from Australia, my knee is still bothering me and the experts have advised me that going from hard courts to playing 5 set matches on clay and then back to indoor hard courts could increase the chances of further injury, set me back even more, and I don’t want to take that risk.”

Andy’s fitness trainer Jez Green explains the risk: “Andy’s workload in the off-season was incredibly high and put a lot of stress on the right knee. This is causing him some problems on certain movements. Changing surfaces three times in such a short time span would be a great risk to further injury.”

Murray concludes: “Last year was very difficult with my wrist injury. I learned about the importance of looking after my body and I don’t want to make any mistakes going forward. Taking this preventive measure is a very difficult decision but because I didn’t play a full year last year, the next two months are very important if I am to maintain my chances of challenging the top players.”

Is Murray genuinely injured? Or is he exaggerating the situation to try an avoid the Davis Cup tie for his own reasons? View our poll.

It's a good move anyway, no point risking anything for a DC tie we are going to lose.

I think he has just pulled out because he didnt want to play DC in clay and switch between courts in a short space of time.  Over on AM.com, there is videos of him running about playing that footy tennis.  He seems to play that quite abit and he is running about without straining.  We did hear before that he may quit DC to prolong on his own career. I wouldn't be surprised if he could play, but an injury makes it easier for fans to accept he wont play.  I'm not saying he is making it up so no-one turns against, but I wouldn't be surprised due to whats been said.  I mean, did anyone hear about the knee during Doha, exibition or even in Australia?  Coaches are saying his training was intensive during off-season, but all of a sudden it comes out he has a sore knee a week before he his 1st match.

I am also skeptical of whether this is really the true reason.

Does anyone think that it is coincidental that andy should decide to go alone and pay his own bills then decides to withdraw from davis cup...or is it a legit injury...i suppose time will tell

Generally speaking you may have a point because he has cast doubt over his future participation but with this particular tie I think there is some truth behind the alleged injury and maybe with a hidden agenda as well.

I don't really care as long as he is fit for his next ATP tournament. Smile We most probably weren't going to win anyway.

Before you start off the hidden agendas, if you read all of Andy's statement he calls it a 'preventative measure'.
I wouldn't have been happy if he'd aggravated his knee condition (diagnosed in 2004) by playing on different surfaces in a short space of time; and surely every fan would agree that keeping injury-free has to be his top priority.

The number of balls represents how much you have posted. The more posts, the more tennis balls.

I don't believe this.... WHAT A f**kWIT! Murray can go to hell! ARGH!! He's so not injured. It just happens to be strained after the Australian Open and that immense run at Doha? YEAH RIGHT. What an arse. Not impressed at all. Letting us down big time, whether we were going to lose or not.

Bring back Tim!

He's being a bit of an ass. The team are gonna start to resent him for this. Well he'll be back for the play-offs, mark my words.

He's just ducking out this time!
