Murray's premature autobiography « on: May 16, 2008, 07:33:47 AM »
Reply with quote

Andy Murray is due to release his autobiography, 'Hitting Back', at the start of June later this year. However, the young Scot has barely started his professional tennis career, and therefore has achieved very little in comparison to what he will hopefully have done ten years from now.

The BBC share the widely publicised opinion that this release is more than a little premature:

The title of Andy Murray’s autobiography is “Hitting Back” and whether or not it heads straight to the BP bargain bucket totally depends upon the public appetite for pages of protest from a 21 year old who, by his own admission, is only just starting out.

It’s scheduled for release at the start of June which may be just in time for Wimbledon but, unfortunately, not in time to include the story behind his first Grand Slam title or even his first Masters Series triumph.

The wild inconsistency to Murray’s tennis so far in 2008 should be more of a concern than “hitting back” in a premature autobiography.

Murray will join a long list of young sportsmen who have released a biography at the start of their career.

I love the comparison to Alan Patridge! lol

One of the brilliant moments in the second Alan Partridge series was when the self-obsessed Radio Norwich DJ published his autobiography. It was called “Bouncing Back” and sales were disappointing. Partridge had to flog it in service stations before eventually pulping thousands of unsold copies at the recycling yard.

But really, this is quite a sad situation - another a mistake by his management as this will make him look hungry for money and a little foolish as well.

I expect this book will be a complete failure - no one but a very small minority of fans will buy it.

I can't see any problem with publishing it, as long as any profits made from it are donated to the LTA, who provided him with money when he was starting out!...otherwise, it just shows him as a greedy young man!

I don't understand why he is doing this, surely his management warned him that this would cause a lot of controversy and subsequently damage his image? I guess not.

I'd be surprised if there are any profits.
Who exactly does he think is going to buy this? And who exactly is going to buy this?
It may even reduce the number of his fans ...

I see only negative publicity and no upside to this, except for his ego.

And his ego will be damaged when he finds out that only his team of coaches, the suck-up yes-men, have bought a copy.

I said several months ago on his official site that I think it's ridiculous to bring the autobiography out before he has really achieved anything of note.  He should keep it unpublished but constantly updated so that it can be brought out fairly quickly should he win Wimbledon or the US Open or whatever (which I do not expect to happen this year).

What's the general consensus over on the other site then? I know they're ridiculously pro-Murray but surely they criticise this decision?

I don't think it's been discussed again recently - if it has, I've missed it.  Of course the previous discussion was on the old forum, which has now been removed.  Maybe I'll have to start a new thread about it on the new forum!

By the way, I think the few people who were completely blinkered on am.com have woken up (I would say it is unfair to tar them all with the same brush).  Even the person who would never hear a word 'against' Andy now believes in constructive criticism.

I'll probably end up picking up a copy.  There's no harm in it.  I really don't know what the big deal is.  I normally hate it when when young people bring out autobiographies, but there's a few reasons why I don't mind this one.

I want to read about his upbringing.  Specifically, I want to hear more of his thoughts on what he thinks of the LTA and how it affected Jamie's career.

I want to read about his friendship with Nole, winning the Orange Bowl, the US Open juniors, the stupid controversy over his comments about the English football team.

I'm most intrigued about his thoughts on Brad Gilbert, though.  So yeah, I don't get what you're all whining about.  There is plenty of interesting stuff that could be in there.  It's not like when Colleen McLaughlin (spelling?) released her autobiography.  Murray had achieved plenty prior to hitting the pro tour.  And since then there has been plenty of controversy.

Again, there's no shortage of things to write about.

You're getting a book just for that? He could have done all that in an interview with the BBC.

And what more could be said on the England team? There's no potential for further information there - he joked and the media did their thing.
