Andy Murray will not have a British rival for at least 5 years, according to Greg Rusedski.

He doesn’t have a rival — which is unfortunate as you need somebody on your tail to push you along.

He has a good friendship with Novak Djokovic, the Serb who is No 3 in the world. But that’s not the same as having someone from your own country challenging you.

I don’t see anybody stepping up to the plate in the near future, so it’s going to be a while before there is a massive rival to Andy.
Greg also thinks it may take a year before Murray can break into the top-10 again.

I can see him getting back in the top 10 but it may take him a year.

Coming back from any injury is difficult. But there were really promising signs at the US Open, especially winning back-to-back matches — although we shouldn’t expect too much too soon.

Ah..I doubt it. I really don't agree with him in any of that. First, I think Andy will have to wait a bit for a rival. But I dont think 5 years. A good few juniors are on the way.
Second, Andy played 2 great matched at the US. So..I see him back in the Top 10 very soon.

Andy won't have a rival for at least 5 years. Agree there entirely.

As for taking a year to get back.... nah, don't agree with that, I reckon he could be back in the top 10 before wimbledon, obviously he needs a pretty good Aus Open, quarters at least. But other than that, I reckon he can do it by Wimbly.

I also think Murray won't have a rival for a long time, probably quite a bit more than 5 years.

You don't f**king need a rival of your own country. Like that's going to decide how soon he gets to the top 10 again. Rolling Eyes

I don't think anyone is saying that a rival will decide how quickly he breaks into the top-10 again, it just happened to be another comment Greg made at the time.

It's just true that when you have someone from your own country on your tail, you don't want them to take all the limelight.

But Andy's always been vocal about the fact that his British ranking doesn't matter to him and it's all about where you are in the world so i don't see that the lack of a rival from the same country is much of a problem for him. Where we do have a problem is Davis Cup.

A rival from your own country is not essential, regardless of ranking but it doesn't hurt either.
