New coaching team behind title win « on: January 06, 2008, 04:38:39 PM »

Judy MurrayAndy Murray's mother, Judy, has revealed that Andy's title victory at Doha is due to technical changes made by his new coaching team.

He is quite confident in terms of his physical ability and one or two of the technical changes he has made.

He's made changes on his forehand and serve. They make a big difference.

And regarding who's doing what in the new team,

Louis is definitely Jamie's coach - he is more the guru guy to Andy, the consultant guy, and Miles Maclagan is the coach who does the travelling with him.

So far it has worked very well, they are all people he's comfortable with and has fun with off the court, so yes he's enjoying it.

The Scot now looks ahead to the invitational Kooyong Classic which starts on Wednesday.

Judy knows Murray got to the finals last year, so basically she is saying that the new coaching team gave him that little bit more to actually win the title. It's not like she's saying they are sole reason behind the success.

I doubt this "team" could do that so quickly. She is just trying to justify leaving Brad. She's not doing a good job at it.

I don't agree Tommy. There's huge amounts the new coaching team can do in an off season. Particularly if all we're talking about is confidence and enjoyment of the game. Plus, there must be some truth in it. We all noticed a particular change in Andy's attitude this week if nothing else. And apart from the final his serve was significantly better. He was tactically very good all week.

Im in between.  His attitude, yes, has been spot on all week.  His serve, apart from Johansson, it wasnt above 60% any other match and his 1st serve points won was around the 70-75% mark. Commentators have been saying from the beginning that he has a good service action and he should be more consistent - above 60% and winning alot of cheap points from it but that has yet to happen.  He has no doubt been working on his serve during the off-season, that was one of the main shots he was wanting to improve - he even said that after Paris.  But I have yet to see it.  The commentator said during Davy match you may get to see his improved serve on a consistent basis later in the year.  I hope its superb for Wimbledon - Ace after Ace!!

Judy is always more diplomatic than Andy. She doesn't have to justify Andy changing his coaching arrangements. That's for him to do.His attitude when he had Petch as a coach was never the way it was with Brad.Something was wrong somewhere. It looked like a great arrangement to have a coach the calibre of Brad Gilbert.Obvioisly some thing was wrong somewhere.Let's wait and see how things develop. It will be interesting.

Remember at Doha last year Andy was fighting a very heavy cold - he was coughing all the time.  This year he was in better general health. That alone will have contributed to a better performance this year. That does not mean the Judy is wrong, though.

I thought his serving was improving until the final - it was poor -
on the coach topic Andy  still gets on well with Petch - what do think the situation will be with Brad ? will we ever know what happened ?

He's brilliantly idiotic at times.

I agree with you on the point of him serving good until the final and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't ever find out what the situation is with Brad - or Petch.

I think both Petch and Andy have both let us know what the situation was between them. Andy felt he needed to move on in order to move up and Petch was happy enough to step aside. No anamosity hence the seemingly good relationship still. I think Petch felt happy that he was able to help Andy for as long as he did. But with Brad, if it was more than what they've said I don't suppose we'll ever know.
