It amazes me that it went from 350 dead to over 10,000 and now they are looking at 100,000.

What a shame the military junta are such @rseholes and not letting the aid get through.  The poor people are suffering! grr

Some 900 students were feared buried by a mudslide caused by the quake when a Sichuan high school building collapsed

Not just hundreds but thousands of people have died. At least 8,500.

One of the reasons I posted it was because several people on here had said they would like to experience an earthquake which I thought was a very strange thing to say, and this terrible event puts those comments into perspective (I hope).

There's no perspective needed, you should probably read the entire conversation.

Here's me thinking you where just posting it to raise awareness of those people affected in the earthquake, but no, it's to show people you where right. Shame.

Sarah - I said this was ONE of the reasons I posted this new item.  Not THE reason. It has nothing to do with right and wrong.  Also, I think it is fair to say that I was really shocked when I read that people would like to be in the middle of an earthquake just for the experience.  It certainly stuck in my mind.

You my friend post like a girl.

Re: News Thread « Reply #2732 on: May 12, 2008, 04:42:14 PM »

I think it was Stalin who said "one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic".

The numbers here and in Burma just get so large that it is hard to comprehend the scale of the suffering / loss after a while.

Still very sad for all those involved though.

A knee-jerk response from someone who probably didn't take the time to read the entire conversation.

As someone who has experienced an earthquake in Spain, I stick by my comments and say that given the hypothetical scenario that the earthquake does not kill or do any major structural damage, I would find it enjoyable to be in one as I did with the previous.

This news provides no perspective on the conversation in question Smile

I would love to be in the middle of a first world earth quake also (felt minor ones in San Francisco), as for third world ones well they will just produce replacement people in no time at all so no real loss in the long term.

There was no further clarification... I changed the use of one word. Your imagination is running riot as usual.

I don't want to move away from this topic, as it's pretty important I feel...

The death toll is now 7,800
