Hey guys, off season, though I'd get a little discussion up and going seeing as it's really quiet already!
Question is SHOULD Andy play the 2008 Olympic games.
Take a look at the schedule and think about it. I'm inclined to say no. It lands directly in the fortnight between Cincinatti and the US Open. It would mean a jaunt all the way to Beijing, think of the jet lag! He would be missing Washington, a 500 series he should do well at and if he's in the us for the stretch playing on the hardcourts, resting for the week before while the rest of the top of the game are in the far east he'd have great preperation for the US Open. I'm inclined to say wait for 2012 Andy!

Everyone everywhere seems to be taking on that you don't get ranking points, i always thought that you do get ranking points. Can anyone confirm whether you get points or not?

Both the ATP and WTA awarded points in 2004 and will for 2008. The men's gold gets 80 points, 1 level less than a Masters series winner. The draws are 64 as opposed to 128 for the highest level and there are players who get excluded from the Olympics by their country's Olympic committee even though by world rankings, they were eligible, so the WTA and ATP don't want to give top points, yet.
I found this answer on another forum. Looking for official info.
Ok, the WTA have an official stance in that they will award the same points as for 2004 which for the guys was IS series Gold 1,000,000 level. Although I don't know how this will work with the new points and 500 series tournaments next year. Will the olympics be worth the same as 500 series cause they set it at IS Gold 1,000,000 cause it was the notch below masters series. I still thing hanging about in the US is the better option...

It would be great to see Andy at the Olympics, but I think staying in the US would be the better option!!!

It really is about the geography and the timing for me. It's the fortnight before the US Open. I'd rather see him in the final at Flushing meadows than have that compromised by a stint at the Olympics. He should definately give it a go in London though.

With regard to the ranking points the WTA have came to an agreement on the points in July2007.
But at the end of that press release it said
"The ITF is still in negotiations with the ATP regarding ranking points for the men players for Beijing. The ATP awarded ranking points for the Olympic Tennis Event in 2000 and 2004 and we are hopeful that they will do the same for 2008.”
It will probably happen but no official statement / agreement with the APT as of yet

I'd rather see him play the Olympics, that I can watch on tele, rather than something I can't. That'll win him more fans for sure.

If Andy decided not to represent GB at the Olympics he would get slaughtered in the press.
The "anybody but England" stuff would be dragged back up and it would be conveniently forgotten about his Davis Cup exploites.
With the Olympics every four years he will only have about 3 or 4 shots at it if he is lucky, I can't see him turning his back on it if he is fit.

Depends how far he gets. They play from the 10th-17th of August. That's the day after Cincy finishes and 6 days before the start of the US Open.
I get what you mean about being slated in the press. And I think he probably will go. But that's why I asked the question SHOULD he go. And I personally don't think it's a great move...

I thought the new 1000 and 500 point tournaments didn't start till 2009 so it wouldn't really affect next year. I think he should play olympics most people would dream of a chance to go.

I think he should do the olympics. Its every four years and he only gets two or maybe three chances to do it. The US Open and all those other tournaments are there every year.

It's sure worth it if you take home a Gold Medal!
I'd love to see him there. As Amy says, the grand slams are every year, the Olympics are every 4. And in sport, it could be a once in a lifetime chance.

But right in the middle of the US Season, and he has to fly to Beijing and back. He complained about flying from country to country to play DC, and this is further.
