Should the voting age be lowered? « on: October 27, 2007, 02:20:16 PM »

The SNP have backed an idea to lower the voting age in the UK to 16. Westminister has the power to do so and the PM has proposed that parliament debate the idea.

What do you think?
I am unsure about it. At time I think it could be lowered, then I think 16 yearolds are too imature to vote. So im just unsure.

but then, some 16 year olds are working full time, paying taxes, and don't get a say on how they are spent? hardly fair is it.

That's true.... and i guess a lot more 16 year ols would pay a lot more attention to politics and all that if they were voting and given a say.... so maybe it could be a good thing.  Think

Interesting topic. My gut reaction would be to say no, but what you're saying does make sense Neil...

Generally no they shouldn't but maybe have it so the ones with full-time jobs have the right to do so.

Nearly impossible to do that though, because it's implicitly discriminating against people who don't have jobs. They should have the same voting rights as their peers even if they're not paying tax.

I think most 16-year-olds don't follow politics enough to have a clear view on it and they will just go and vote something that gets a lot of media attention without it representing their opinion. Well, if they have an opinion, because mostly they tend to follow what most people say is the 'right' point of view. Rolling Eyes

If anything, the voting age should be higher, because 18 still is too young.

I think it's fine the way it is.
As much as I and a few others I know would like to have a say in the political system, many others have no interest, but as said above, that isn't only for under 18's.

There's no way it will be altered, that would mean parties would have to then appeal to an even wider range, and lets admit that no one is going to want to attract "teen yobs..."  Rolling Eyes
