 Glossy magazines face airbrush ban

Magazines could be banned from using airbrushed photographs of celebrities that make them look slimmer over fears that they are promoting unrealistic body images.

Editors from glossy publications including Vogue, Hello! and Elle are to meet to discuss best practice on using digitally enhanced pictures.

The Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), which represents the magazine industry, has said a series of discussions will be held.

The move follows criticisms by the Model Health Inquiry, which accused editors of acting irresponsibly and promoting a size-zero culture.

The report, released last September, urged the fashion industry to adopt a voluntary code on the use of computer technology to give models unrealistically perfect figures.

In December, the British Fashion Council wrote to editors and advertisers about the issue and asked them what could be done.

The use of digitally-enhanced images of actresses such as Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley in magazines or to promote films has been criticised for its effect on women's body image.

Winslet, who has consistently defended fuller-figured women, appeared on the cover of GQ magazine in a picture that was airbrushed to make her appear slimmer.

Knightley's bust was noticeably enhanced on the US posters for the film King Arthur in 2004.

The PPA announcement came on the same day as an expert in eating disorders claimed that society's obsession with being slim was encouraging diet-binge cycles and bulimia.

Prof Janet Treasure, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, said yesterday that people's brains could be permanently altered in the process, making them more susceptible to other addictions.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7415911.stm I thought this was quite cool. It's just using fibre optics, but you can see people from London to New York. No internet involved, just live pictures actually shown through the "tunnel".

That's fantastic - could only happen in Kerala with its Communist government.

The dhoti-only rule applies to everyone visiting particularly holy shrines (including tourists) all across southern India (in particular).
Hindu extremists are now liable to target the judge.

Cat puts Japan rail firm on track

A loss-making Japanese railway company is back on track thanks to the popularity of a stray cat.

Wearing a black cap and posing for photos with passengers, Tama the tabby is credited with boosting Wakayama Electric Railway's revenue by 10%.

The firm had to axe all staff at Kishi station in western Japan two years ago.

But Tama stuck by her post and was rewarded with promotion to station manager. The pet mascot even has her own office, a former ticket booth.

Knowing the Japanese, the cap's probably been stapled to its left ear (for photogenic purposes). lol

Panda moved after China quake gives birth to twins

Sunday July 6, 2008 7:46 AM

BEIJING (AP) - A panda who was relocated after China's deadly earthquake damaged her home gave birth to twin cubs on Sunday, a state news agency said.

Guo Guo is the first panda to give birth since the 7.9-magnitude quake struck Sichuan province on May 12, killing nearly 70,000 people and leaving 5 million homeless, Xinhua News Agency reported.

One cub weighed 6 ounces, Xinhua said. Guo Guo was cuddling the other cub and staffers at the Bifengxia Giant Panda Base were not able to weigh it. The report did not give the sex of the twins.

Twelve-year-old Guo Guo was moved to the Bifengxia panda center after the quake caused heavy damages at the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's main panda breeding center where Guo Guo normally lives.

Wolong, tucked in the lush mountains of Sichuan province, was close to the epicenter of the earthquake and sustained heavy damage. One panda there was killed and another remains missing.

Most of its 63 pandas had to be moved after the quake because of the threat of landslides and other hazards.

Some were taken to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Base about 75 miles outside Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu. Others were taken to another breeding center in Chengdu and facilities in the Chinese capital of Beijing, the eastern province of Fujian and the southern province of Guangdong.

Phones at the Bifengxia panda center rang unanswered Sunday.

The Wolong preserve is at the heart of China's gargantuan effort to use captive breeding and artificial insemination to save the endangered giant panda, which is revered as an unofficial national mascot.

Only about 1,600 pandas live in the wild, mostly in Sichuan. An additional 180 have been bred in captivity, many of them at Wolong, and scores have been loaned or given to zoos abroad, with the revenues helping fund conservation programs.

Apparently it just cut to the pay-per-view hardcore porn channel for no apparent reason and instead of the rugby show, viewers got a scene from "Desperate Black Wives 2." roflmao
