Tube Escalators
« on: October 21, 2005, 08:11:07 PM »
As I do most days in the week, I was travelling using the London underground and as I was going up the escalators and I wondered what would happen if it broke down suddenly - would everyone fall back like dominos?
And how suddenly would the escalators stop if you press the big red stop button.
People usually just stand on one step not holding on to anything and I just think that's a huge hazard.

One way to find out - press the big red stop button and see....... then again, maybe not
edit: then again.... be near the top, hold on tight and do it..... that'll learn 'em to hold on

well, maybe not Elly! These london tube escalators scare me too....well if there was an accident and the thing was to stop i think it does it during 5 seconds, not just like stop 'dead'....but if there was a power cut, yea i suppose dominos all the way to the bottom
So hold on mate...or take a jog down the stairs each morning - easy and faster

I know, I was just being flippant. God knows I would hate to have to travel that way every day...... don't get me wrong, I love London... but to live there...no... and given the terrorist attacks earlier in the year. well, I needn't say more.

I commute for about 3 hours every day and it used to wear me down but now I've got my fitness back with playing tennis and eating healthily, I've kinda got used to it. About the terrorism, that's sometimes in the back of my mind but I always sit in the back carriage as I think a bomber is unlikely to blow himself up there as it would kill the least number of people. Thinking like that, even though it's just a personal theory of mine and might be wrong, helps the anxiety.

Oh my gosh - it's unthinkable where I live to have to spend that kind of time commuting - but not only that, with the fear that must accompany it. I really hope my flippant attempts at humour haven't upset people. Things that are too close to home can lose their humour pretty quickly I find.

I live quite close to London and use the Tibe quite a lot but I feel no much more at risk than before July 7th. You can't just live your whole life in fear that you might get hurt.

Absolutely.... no way should these people stop others living their lives. I feel I am very lucky to live where I do, even though it's allegedly the oil capital of Europe, we seem to be relatively safe.
But, as top spin said, best to leave all this in the past where it belongs..... we have our Andy playing to look forward to next week

I asked one of the members of staff and his first response to me was like "No, don't do that! That's bad!"
Anyway, not sure I can remember correctly but I think he said it stops within a few inches of pressing the button

How is that for a escalator diagram
I always find it a pain that the handrails don't match the speed of the stairs (sorry if this has been said before)

Seriously, where on earth in this world do the handrails go at a different speed than the stairs?
