Mark said that his student loan interest has just went up and it got me thinking, how much will it be likely to cost if you want to go to University and does it vary from location to location?

I was a mature student (Que cheeky remark from Bev) and was in the fortunate position that my employer paid for everything for a year including my wages whilst I studied full time (and four years part time day-release before that). So I have no real idea of just how costly it is.

So if you are studying now or are just about to start studying how much do you expect to have to pay for it?

(I'm not looking for pounds, shillings and pence, just a ball park figure).

Well funny you should say that, I had a phone call from the college I'm applying to for part time study and I asked how much will it be and they said they couldn't give me an exact price but last years was £780.  Hopefully I'll get my work to pay for that though.

Don't have to pay tuition fees, or a graduation endowment fee so it will just be living expenses/accommodation for 4 years - probably around £6000-£8000? Smile

Your student loan not only is there for your tuition fees but it's there for when you live away from home so it can get pretty big. And with the current interest rate at 4.8%, that's just not very nice at all no

In my place they would pay a percentage dependant on the subject.

If it was for your Job it was 100%

If it was for career development but not job related 80%

or if it was for personal development 50%

or something like that.

Well its an accounts course and I work in finance so I think if it was the same case at my work it would be 100%.

My first choice of Uni is currently Edinburgh which is £4,600 per year. Durham, probably my next choice is £3,950 per year. And that's just tuition fees, accommodation in Edinburgh will sure double those figures Rolling Eyes

Pretty much the same as Julia, my recent fears of not being able to afford university have been swept aside with some news, which lets not go into. But I can afford to go now, but I expect to still be paying my fees off at the age of 40. Excellent.

My education cost me nothing but looks like my kids are going to cost me thousands of $$$$$ fainting  Although there are lots of sponsorships/scholarships available here for the kids to apply for pray

Costing me nothing.  I live with my parents and get a bursary of 200+ quid per month from SAAS.  I'm not getting a loan and getting into debt.  Besides, I'll be qualified in a year so there's not long to go.

Plan on going for my doctorate at some point.

No student loan for me. Very generous grandparents have given me money to pay for my education. Most of it from my Grandfather's will.
No living costs as I'm still at home with my parents so it's just been Uni/course fees. That's been around $6000 a year (about 2400 pounds currently). Been lucky enough to get a scholarship which has given me $3000 a year for my 2nd, 3rd and 4th years so for the last 3 years I've only had to pay half the fees myself. Then in addition to course fees there has been the cost of books and the major regular expense of transport (bus fares). I haven't kept exact records but I imagine books and transport would easily add another $1000 a year. And then there's other times you buy food and drinks etc. Not every day for me as I take lunch from home but there are still plenty of occasions where I may buy hot drinks or soup during winter, dinner when I have to stay late etc.

Very fortunate to not have a student loan and a lifetime of debt to look forward to.

I hope you mean £6k-£8k per annum, otherwise you're in for a nasty shock (unless you're going somewhere really cheap, like Elgin? [Moray College of Further Education?]).
Presumably about £12k a year would be a reasonable total ...

Like Bev, I paid nothing for my "education": tuition fees were paid by the government, and I got a maximum grant to cover living expenses (a little over £2k per annum in 19-rumpty-tum).

The whole idea of getting people to pay for their education is ludicrous: I remember marching through London and waving a placard trying to stop it.
Fat lot of good that did, since we seem to be stuck with it (unless the Nats start re-introducing student grants, as well as the Scottish Government paying tuition fees).
