Wimbledon Guide 2007 « on: June 20, 2006, 12:50:00 PM »

I'm creating this thread because so many people have asked me for advice about queueing at Wimbledon. This just might save me having to repeat myself twenty times  Wink

My advice....

Just to clear something up - Unlike the other Grand Slams, Wimbledon doesn't really have an "evening session." If you go in the morning, you've got tickets for the whole day until the end of play. This applies to both ground passes and show court tickets. If you go in after 6pm (I think) then the prices reduces.

If you want Show Court tickets..... ie. Centre, Number 1 Court, Number 2 Court.....

If you want Centre Court tickets, you MUST queue up overnight. Last year we joined the queue on Thursday morning at about 10am for Friday's play, this year we plan to queue from Tueday morning for Thursday's play.  Note that you'd be able to join it later than that as the queue doesn't usually start to build in high numbers until later on in the day...... however I like to be safe and be one of the first! Remember that the length does vary depending on the day, weather, who is playing etc.

Don't be put off by the sheer number of people in the queue - the first year we went I was expecting there not to be many people BUT there were THOUSANDS!

If you're camping, and you take a tent, there are left luggage cabins outside. They used to be inside the grounds but they changed it.

Lot's of people take BBQ's too..... but there are plenty of pizza places and stuff which you can use also...... just make sure you tell them which queue you are in because there are two!

If you want a ground pass.....

If you want to be in the grounds before play starts, I'd say you'd need to be in the queue for about 6am.

The queue lasts all day though....... so if you just want to go for the last couple of hours then you could do that too.

Travel.....

Southfields is the nearest tube station to the club NOT Wimbledon.

Parking anywhere in the area is an absolute nightmare, so if you're coming by car then I'd say park in another district and then get the train in. It's so much easier because you really can't park anywhere near the place.

Other bits

If you're in the queue the day before, you'll be put into a "holding position" until they form the proper queue. This usually happens in the evening, but don't worry, you won't lose your place. They always seem to know what time people turned up.
EDIT: this was what happened in 2005 but last year (2006) we stayed in the same position all day/night so this seems to vary year on year.

If you do turn up as early as me (!), then make sure you tell the steward that you're queueing for TOMMOROW'S play and not today  Wink

I'd say get in as early as you can. It's a really fun experience, and you can meet lots of interesting mad people!

Anyway.... hope that helps people. If there's anything else ya wanna know, feel free to ask me.

Most of all, if you're going, have a great time! I know I will Smile and don't forget to take lots of pics  Wink

EDIT: Guys I have just added/changed a few things based on last year.

As I said in the other thread. If you arrive at 10pm the night before, u will probably get court 1 tickets offered to you teh next day MAYBE centre. Court 2 is mostly seated with a small standing area for ground pass people so these are on offer too.

To guarantee ground tickets for sure, arrive before 6am as tennis player said, but up to about 6.30-7 and you might just make it in... otherwise it's a wait until people leave, so your talking 2pm earliest which is a long wait.... 7 hours or so! SO get there before 6am if you want in before play starts!

By arriving at 5.40am last year, I missed on court 2 tickets by 3 places, but my mates got 2 of them as they arrived 10 minutes earlier.

You can refuse centre/court1/court2 tickets if they are offered as obviously they are more expensive.

I shall be refusing on the grounds i have my fill on main court action on tuesday and would like to give as many people a chance as possible. I think ground passes needs to be experienced as well. Of course, u can leave the main courts if u want, but that's a little crazy if your paying all that money.... Anything else?

One of the best things about queueing is you get the rival refreshment companies competing for sales! They come along offering free samples .... i.e. tropicana orange juice, and then someone else comes along trying to get you too buy bottles! Other's just give out free drink and stuff!

Practical Advice

  • Bring Suntan lotion
  • Bring shades and a hat (you have to look uber cool in the queue)
  • bring some music/a book/entertainment
  • bring plenty water and food, or make sure u take advantage of the various burger vans, drinks vendors and such like dotted along the queue
  • have a good breakfast!
  • you may well want to bring something to sit on too.... the queue may take a while to start moving, but this is up to you

Once your in the queue, the stewards come along with a little card with your place in the queue written on it. This means u can leave the queue FOR A SHORT TIME to get food/drink, visit the bathroom, or (in my case last year) stand with friends in a different part of the queue til it's near the entrance (if this affects anyone, the person at the back should always go forward, that way they aren;t skipping in front, but waiting for people to pass them)

If you do leave the queue for any reason, just let the people around u know, especially if your on your own. If your with a friend just tell them where ur off to, just in case a steward asks. You can't leave the queue and estimate when to come back. lol That's about all I can think of....

I've stickied the topic now...

Should this thread be renamed to 'Wimbledon Guide' or is it fine how it is?

Well, I suppose if anyone has any questions at all wimbledon related they can go in here. So I vote yes, rename it.

Edit: I love how my opinion is all that apparently matters. lol well, how the first person to respond's opinion matters.
