2018 Schedule Discussion Thread

Quote

Now we know Andy is very unlikely to return to the match court in 2017, having opted to rest and rehabilitate his hip injury, I thought I'd kick off the 2018 schedule thread so we can look forwar to the new season, particularly since Andy also announced that he'll start his 2018 season in Brisbane, a tournament he won back to back titles at in 2012 and 2013, but hasn't returned to since, opting instead for Doha in 2014 and 2016, and the Hopman Cup in Perth in 2015 and 2016. Andy will start he seasons in Australia in 2018, 2019, and 2020 as part of a three year contract with Tennis Australia.

Andy's schedule has been a bit changeable over the last few years, due to the return from surgery in 2014, Davis Cup in 2015, arrival of mini-Murray #1 in 2016, and illness and injury in 2017, so the schedule is based on those years and I will add or delete as appropriate as the year progresses.

2018 will be the first year Andy meets the three requirements - aged 30+, 12 years on tour, 600 matches played - to be able to skip whatever he wants without penalty. Some expect him never to go to Indian Wells again, he won't have to worry about playing 4 ATP 500 events each year, and he can skip whichever Masters he wants. Obviously anything can happen!

We all should hope Sir Andy will have time to get fit as can be for 2018 year.  He was behind eight ball in 2017.   Everyone can expect coach Ivan Lendl putting high priority on fitness and training after hip recovery..

Andy Murray's slow start to the season examined: Ivan Lendl thinks the World No 1 needed even more practice
[excerpt]
There have been suggestions that Murray paid the price for his exertions at the end of last year, when he gave his all in his ultimately successful pursuit of the world No 1 ranking and then had only a brief break before heading to a 17-day winter training camp in Miami with Lendl.

However, Lendl said the problem with the December training block had been that it was too short rather than too arduous.

β€œI could have used another week,” Lendl said. β€œIn my mind three or three and a half weeks is ideal for your biggest training block of the year in December. The problem with the season is that it goes on so long. Just imagine what that would have looked like if Britain had been in the final of the Davis Cup. Then it would have been a total shambles.”
[/excerpt]

It is no doubt for me he can win Australian Open if he is ready. He has been so close.
So whatever schedule is for 2018, all should hope Sir Andy can follow Iron Ivan's fitness regime and we will watch him have great 2018 year!

^ Ditto!

PS - Thanks for the reminder that next year Andy's schedule will be free from ATP requirements, which in itself is good news.

Perhaps the Lendl adoration stuff could go on the Lendl thread...?

Anyway, yes good that Andy doesn't have to play such a packed schedule from next year. I know Simon Briggs in the Torygraph is convinced that Andy will never go to IW ever again. Perhaps he doesn't need to play 3 clay Masters and 2 before the USO. I'd like to see him skip Cincy if he does well in Canada. When it comes to ATP 500s he has the contract with Queens to play every year, but he might also play Dubai, and then see later in the season how things are going and whether to play Beijing and Vienna. The former is very well paid.

^  I like the black & white pics of Lendl, he looks very athletic.  I don't actually remember him looking like that at the time!
However I do feel he  has pushed Andy far too far - there's surely a limit to practice, training and general keep fit.
I'm sorry - not sorry at all - but I think Andy has these upcoming months to recover, he should consider making a change to Lendl, start 2018 with a new outlook and a new Lendl too.

Andy should now just concentrate on the slams with a few favourite masters and one 500 ie Queens. Top his career off in the singles before joining his brother in the doubles. Where he can win more slams.

I think this would be the right thing for him to do.

Really good news that Andy now will have more choice over his schedule  thumb up
Must admit I did a lot of  Rolling Eyes when I read Lendl had said he needed "more training/practising." Does he want to kill him?
It would be good if Andy got someone on board who would encourage him to come off the baseline and attack the net.
Someone like  Think...........another A.M. perhaps........

Perfect.

We wish.    I've always wanted Martina for Andy.     She so admires him and his tennis and I'm sure she would be good for him.

That could depend on how long Jamie wanted to continue playing, and from what I'm hearing from him it doesn't sound as though he wants to go on for more than maybe a couple of years.

I feel the same ILA.  In fact it'll be interesting to see if Lendl dumps Andy again, and I for one would be delighted.  I could scarcely believe it either when he said that Andy's already punishing training block last year should have gone on for longer!

There may be nothing to 'dump' unfortunately. But if does get back to competing then I don't think protracted process of getting used to a new coach will necessarily be helpful.

More generally all the 'lendl is too tough'  stuff is as silly as the 'Amelie is too soft' nonsense we saw a couple of years ago. None of us know anything much about Andy's private relations with  his coaches, and such commentary merely seeks to fill that knowledge vacuum with projections based on characature and gender stereotype.

Why the negativity about competing again when Andy has effectively committed himself to playing for three more years by forming a partnership with Tennis Australia whereby he starts his season in that country?  I do realise that something could change this, like another injury or family commitments, but for the moment the desire and the intention are clear.  Also Andy is in a much better place now anyway than he was after having back surgery.

As for comments made on here, that's mainly what forums are for, so I see nothing with members expressing what they feel, on the tennis threads anyway so long as they aren't abusive or disrespectful towards either Andy or other members.
