Adelaide R1: Andy Murray vs Sebastian Korda

Quote

To kick off his 2023 season Andy plays 22 year old world No. 33 and big serving Sebastian Korda to whom he lost in the QF of the Gijon Open in October with Korda winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in a match which lasted for 2 hrs 27 mins.  There were a lot of long rallies in the first set which saw Andy 5-2 down at one point, but greatly improved serving saw him take the second, then with the momentum in Andy's favour Korda turned things around by playing aggressive almost faultless tennis in the third.  Korda then went on to reach the final, the third of his career, where he lost in straight sets to Andrey Rublev.  He then played at the European Open where he again reached the final but was defeated similarly by Felix Auger-Aliassime.  At the Paris Masters he exited in three at the hands of Alex de Minaur in R1.  He ended the year with a 34-22 win/loss record.

I take it that Adelaide is not on Amazon coverage but is on TennisTV.

Frustrating that information appears so late and coverage is not available for this tournament and United Cup where I am currently reduced to looking at live score information point by point (Glad to say that Dan has a break of serve lead in the deciding set but it all seems very erratic from him).

Unfortunately that is the case.  Amazon are showing the WTA matches in Adelaide but not the ATP ones.

The schedule is out for Monday but Andy isn't on it.

Aileen, Thank you. I am glad to say that Dan Evans finally won in the United cup so we progress to the next stage as group winners. More to follow in a few days time?

I see Korda is playing doubles tomorrow, something which might give him a bit of an advantage.

^ I noticed that too. In any tournament that Andy enters I think he should play a friendly match the day (or two) before to get himself up to speed. By match I mean that he tries to win but it is not essential and he tests out his game on a similar surface before he plays in R1. Depends on some other players wanting to do the same and on courts being available!  He is renowned as a slow starter so he perhaps would benefit from something like that?

^ I agree, and also from the enthusiastic way he talked about it I was rather surprised he didn't opt for the United Cup where he'd have got plenty of matches.  Quite frankly if he goes out early here, then I don't see much hope for the AO unless he decides to play in the Kooyong Classic which runs from 10-12 Jan.

And don't be too hard on Dan because he's struggling with illness at the moment.

Korda's opponents in the doubles pulled out but they did play a substitute team with Daniels and Nishioka and win in straight sets.

Following Andy's match on Live scores. No idea how he is playing from that as it is going with service and no break points have occured.

PS Just as i wrote that Andy had two break points but they came to nothing so it is now 3-3 first set still on serve. Needs this next service game to be good?

^ Just lost his serve so he needs to bounce back quickly.................................and gets another two break points. Succeeds on the second so back to 4-4. Needs to not drop a game from here.

6-6 tiebreak. Korda looks strong on service now with eight points in a row.

Fingers crossed for some magic from Andy to win this set.
