Andy at Brisbane 2018

Quote

That's a full and honest account of the sutuation from Andy.

He's clearly doing everything he can both mentally and physically, but the hip looks done and that could be the end.

Everyone knows surgery would be a very long shot, but if i was betting now i think he might take it. He might then at least be able to do some exhos and charity matches when retired

Poor Andy, this is clearly hell for him. I hate to say it but I think he'll retire at Wimbledon. The spirit is willing but

That was quite hard to read Frown

It's really not looking good but I hope I'm just being negative.

Heartbreaking to read. It seems like our worst fears may be realised. If he has surgery now then that will be the end of his competitive career.

God, this is so sad. Just have to keep on hoping that it isn't totally the end.

What a horrible start to the new year, for him and his fans

Andy has just posted this on Facebook.  Apologies if it’s already been posted.  It must be so frustrating for him.

Thanks for the link, I don't know what to say.

"According to sources of the BBC, Murray has a torn labrum, which is a ring of cartilage around the acetabulum.

"Following surgery, crutches will be used for up to six weeks and there should be no expectation to return to activities such as running for at least a period of six months[28]""

I'm just quoting this from a decent poster from the Talk Tennis forums.

Those 'reliable' sources were quoted by Russell Fuller, there is no definitive diagnosis. The thing is, if it is a labrum tear, then I don't understand why he thought (or was told) that he could rehab it with rest etc. It doesn't make any sense to me because "Once torn, the labral tissue in the hip does not have the ability to heal on its own. ... Surgical interventions are available to clean out the hip joint, and repair or reconstruct the torn labral tissue"

More speculation from the press. Think I've seen at least three different diagnoses of Andy's hip problem, others are an impingement issue, a small socket condition, various other degenerative things. As you say if it is a labrum tear then it makes no sense to have avoided surgery. Not only that but Andy said at Wimbledon that he'd been managing this problem for a long time - he first had hip and back problems in 2007 I think - so it seems very doubtful he's been managing a labrum tear for a decade or more.

Even with surgery I'd predict it would be almost 18 months before Andy could compete at a level he would be happy at.  Just my opinion but I think Andy should walk away from competitive tennis. Take time out, have surgery and return as coach as well as enjoying running his successful business empire. Love you Andy. You make us so proud.

I can't see Andy retiring if he speaks of how much he loves playing tennis, he might go down the Tommy Haas route of retiring on his own terms, not being forced due to an injury. I don't think Haas is actually retired lol and he's what 40??

I'm pretty gutted to be honest but one thing for sure is that it's been a privilege supporting Andy since 2005 when I first saw him play at the Queen's club.

It isn't over.  It isn't.  It's just a hiatus.
