Andy at the European Open, Antwerp

Quote

Andy has now pulled out citing fatigue but hopes to play in Basel and Paris.

For those interested, there are still two British players in the draw - Dan Evans, who's the No. 5 seed, and Jack Draper.

^ Could be an interesting match up against Munar. A solid player but I think Andy playing well should win. Not sure about the next rounds though.

Are you sure about his potential QF opponent?  To me it looked as it would be Korda or Kachenov. I think that BvdZ is in the other half.

^ Thanks MA.  I really shouldn't try to do these things in a hurry because my eyesight isn't what it used to be!  Yes it would be Khachanov, Korda or Giron in the QF.  Have amended accordingly.

^ Aileen, I know that I am rather biased in my support for Andy but I thought that at times he played well in Gijon and showed his ranking is about right at present. He needs a few days where the 'at times' goes missing? That is the hard bit needed now.  I rate his chances against Munar because he clearly wants to win and his confidence in playing some spectacular shots, that others would never think of, was clearly there.

Amazon Prime shows that they are covering the matches of all three Brits in the European Open so Monday will be another day watching tennis. Not sure how many courts there are in Antwerp for this tournament. Might all be done on one?

^ There are two courts in Antwerp.

As for the scheduling - remember what I told you before!  They don't always get it right, and nor would it surprise me if, in the circumstances, Andy didn't play until Tuesday.

Thanks Aileen for the info, at last can see Andy on Amazon Prime.

Now that the official schedule for tomorrow is out, Andy isn't down as playing, although Jack and Dan are.

Just read that Andy has pulled out of the European Open citing fatigue.
Says he still plans to play Basal and Paris.

^ I've just read that too so will amend the introduction to this thread.

I was half-expecting this anyway after the way he performed in the Korda match.  Not that he played badly but just ran out of steam in the third set, I think because he'd been suffering from a bad cold in the run-up to the tournament.

True. Hoped to watch him play this week, but I think this is the best thing to do right know.

Andy plays Jaume Munar in round 1, with the possible prospect of the No. 8 seed Yoshihito Nishioka in round 2 and the No. 4 seed Karen Khachanov in the QF, either that or an instant rematch with Sebastian Korda.

The other British interest is Dan Evans, who's seeded No. 5, and Jack Draper.

like the picture....!

The tournament, which is a 250, is being shown on Amazon Prime.

I do too.  Antwerp sounds a very interesting place to visit.

Shame Andy won't be playing, but needs to get some strength back after his cold. Looking forward to Basel now.

Haven't read all the posts yet but I am sure that all are sad that Andy is resting and not playing in Antwerp. I did not realise that he had a cold. With Andy's lethargic style prowling around the court I never know how fit he is.
