Andy has withdrawn. No reason given.

I suppose this was inevitable in the circumstances, but it's also unfortunate because in the past week so many top players have withdrawn that Andy would have been the No. 6 seed.

Will he be on Davis Cup team? Being on the team might be what he needs right now.

I agree, and he's going to be needed as Dan has withdrawn with a leg injury, Even Cam is suspect now too! Andy could play doubles as well as singles, which would be great for him.

The DC is three weeks away. Is it wise to have such a long break from competitive tennis? And with so many prominent players out Moselle would have been an opportunity to build up some confidence with potentially more than one match, apart from gaining ranking points. But who knows what‘s behind the decision.

Whatever is behind the decision, all I know is that it wasn't made in a hurry because Andy was still down as playing on Thursday evening, and in fact it was only because I was about to open the tournament thread that I double-checked and discovered he'd withdrawn. It's all been done so much behind the scenes that even the British media haven't caught up with it yet.

Chris, it wasn't a case of Andy not saying anything to the media but the fact that his withdrawal hasn't been reported anywhere, not even on BBC Sport. Nothing was even said on the tournament website. My concern is that his recent displays of temper on court aren't exactly winning him friends.

I can relate to his smashing a racket after losing twice from a winning position. Though I admit I did not see both matches and therefore do no know how he came across.
What I found more off-putting recently were his verbal outbursts when things did not fully go his way. It will only benefit his opponents and makes him little endearing, sadly.

Good article but with some not very pretty pictures. What else Andy said to Mike Dickson isn't on record, but what he did say was "What happened today ... that's not really me."

I admit I was actually relieved when he pulled out of Metz because another bad tempered match I didn't really want to watch, and I agree about his verbal outbursts, but if he plays in the DC and still behaves like this, then that really will be the end as far as I'm concerned.

Isn't it easy to be critical. Does Mike Dickson not understand that it is a massive part of his life that is like an addiction. If you had lost to the same guy that you want to beat so many times in such a short time and so badly (two massive melt-downs) then I think you might want to release anger. I do not like that but the circumstances were unusual. I doubt if he will do it again.
I, personally, think that he wants to be good again too quickly and his target for his ranking this or next year may be unrealistic. It will take him a few more years yet to be even a little more competitive with the best! Alternatively he needs to lose the winning motivation and play more for the sheer enjoyment. That is hard, I have been there with my running and the mental approach change needed is hard, nearly impossible, to achieve.
At this time I feel that he should be playing as much as possible so do more Challenger events to work on the game as it is the not winning points that is letting him down. He still plays well with exceptional touch and is a joy to watch. The crowds that turn up to watch him play seem to agree with me.
He should have played Moselle to get his mind cleared and to enjoy a tennis match again. Well that is my view, others will take an opposite stance probably.

MA - I'd be quite pleased if he went back to playing Challengers at least for a while to get his confidence back, and also winning keeps him happy, and if he's happy he's enjoying himself. I like watching Challengers too because there seems to be less stress there. It's just a pity that ChallengerTV's pictures aren't all that great and also they only have one camera covering the entire court. Still, we can't have everything!
As for "It will take him a few more years yet to be even a little more competitive with the best!", at 36 and a half he hasn't got a few more years (he might if he played doubles). Not only that but his resurfaced hip isn't going to last forever.
We still don't really know why he pulled out of Moselle, but whatever the reason the decision wasn't taken right after he lost in Paris, because he was still down as playing on Thursday evening when the player list was updated. It's easy to assume that he simply chickened out, but Andy has never been known for that in the past, so why now? Maybe he picked up an injury? Maybe something going on at home? Who knows?

Thanks Aileen good very good read, and good to see that the older guys get what Andy is feeling, it must be very hard or him.

Andy has pulled out of the Davis Cup team citing a shoulder injury, so I'm thinking that this was the reason he pulled out of this tournament.
