Andy at the Swiss Indoors, Basel

Quote

Andy has a bit of a history with this tournament which is an ATP 500 played at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel and which this year runs from 24 - 30 October.

In 2005 he defeated Tim Henman 6-2 5-7 7-6 (7-4) in round 1 here, then went on to beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 before losing 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Fernando Gonzalez, but in 2011 he pulled out of the tournament, for which he'd requested a wild card, because of a mysterious right gluteal muscle strain, withdrawing shortly before his first round match against Robin Haase was due to start, afterwards claiming that "I don't know how I did it or what it came from. I've never had anything like this before".  The following year, having just lost to Djokovic in the final of the Shanghai Masters in three sets despite having five match points at 5-4 in the second, he pulled out again two days before it was due to start citing a back problem and saying that he wanted to rest before finishing the season, something which caused the director Roger Brennwald, who created the tournament in 1970, to comment "There is a fine line between good luck and bad luck".  This will be the first time he's arranged to play here since then, although no tournament took place in 2020 and 2021 because of covid.

The player field has five top 20 players - Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Marin Cilic and Pablo Carreno Busta.

The other British interest is Jack Draper who, as 1st alternate, gained entry to the main draw this week after Nick Kyrgios pulled out.

All matches will be shown on Amazon Prime.

I don't know when the draw is, but probably sometime today.

Thanks Aileen, I so hope Andy will be fit enough and doesn't have to withdraw.

The draw was this afternoon.  I think Andy has to play Korda again in the first round whilst Jack Draper plays the number one seed Alcaraz.  Not a good draw for either but I think Andy feels that he should have beaten Korda last time! Great for his confidence if he could.

Round two for Andy, should he win, would be a qualifier or Batista Agut.

Ruud is really not that big a concern on an indoor hardcourt. He's about the best seed Murray could get. There's really no route through a 32 man draw without facing seeds when you're unseeded.

Ironically before I logged on here I was watching Korda play Thiem in the Antwerp SF and a very good match it was too.  Korda came back from a set and a break down to take the third 7-4 in the tiebreak.  Whatever his ups and downs have been in the past he does seem like a young man who's at last realising his full potential.  I think the only thing that might go against him here is the fact that he's reached two finals in consecutive weeks so might feel a little fatigued, or with Paris next week even pull out.

Alcaraz is a tough one for Jack but at least he's already secured his place in the NextGen finals in Milan.

It'll be interesting to see if Korda pulls out of this tournament because at the end of the first set in the Antwerp final he had a lengthy MTO for a right shoulder problem which seemed to affect him for the rest of the match.  He did very well to continue to play through it but lost 3-6, 4-6 to Auger-Aliassime, his second consecutive final loss.

Korda has pulled out it seems. No surprise after making two successive finals. Safiullin it is then, a qualifier. He's in good form too and has finally broke the top 100. Murray lost to him last year. Tough match this one.

^ No change in the tournament schedule though, so the match won't be until Tuesday.

I understand that he will play Russian Roman Safiullin on Tuesday. I will leave you to confirm this with date and time.
