Andy at the WTF 2015

Does anyone know when the draw for this is? For some reason, I reckon it was on the Tuesday before the tournament last year, but the WTF website infuriatingly has no information on it. I'm bewildered as to why not, because the draw is a fairly big deal. Think

Joe, the draw is on Thursday night, I have 7pm in my head, but it could be 9pm. I believe Sky are broadcasting it and last year I listened to it on BBC Radio 5L.

Andy started his DC clay court practising with Bedene yesterday afternoon, light hitting, before going hard at it Tuesday-Friday, then he'll go into the hard court at the O2.

Ah thanks - that seems later than previous years, but I'll take it.

Double checked and the time is Thursday from 7pm.

Apparently Andy has requested to play his round robins - assuming he does play, because there is still that question mark - on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to give himself enough adjustment time. Least the ATP could do is given him that schedule, given their bullying tactics after the DC SF, and given that he helped them out last year when Fed withdrew from the final. The key issue for Andy seems to be around movement and what switching between the 'totally different' movements for each might do to to his back.

All sounds pretty complicated for him and whatever he does he'll get criticised by someone.

Why didn't he ask for Sunday, Tuesday and thursday ?

According to Briggs in the Torygraph (see articles thread) the requested days are to give himself a bit more time on the O2 hard court having been on clay from the start of this week through until Friday.

The WTF groups are no longer just A and B - they are now named after past champions. This year Group A will be named after Stan Smith and Group B after Ilie Nastase.

Also, not sure if this is 100% confirmed but I've read that the alternates will be Gasquet and Cillic. Tsonga, Isner and Anderson reportedly declined the second alternate spot.

Usually i would say Andy would give this is all as the last event of the year but i feel he will have one eye on the DC still and therefore won't be surprised to see him not even reach the semi finals. Would love to be wrong and he could make it simply because he is better than everyone there bar Fed and Djokovic. It will all depend on the group he's in.

My fantasy would be for Djoker to have Fed and Rafa in his group Very Happy

What i think Andy should do is just swing from the hip, ballbash and play aggressive and see how it all works out. The last thing he needs is to grind his way through tough 3 set matches.

He seems to have been more aggressive in recent matches - perhaps precisely to avoid slugfests.

I sometimes wonder if he will switch to more ball bashing in coming years, as the constant retrievals get more taxing.

As I wrote on another thread the fact that he's asked to play Monday, Wednesday and Friday suggests he is serious about playing at the 02 but not serious about getting to the final.  Indeed, I suspect there's a big part of him that would prefer not to as it reduces the turnaround time before DC.  It would be ironic wouldn't it, if this were the first year he made the final.  It could happen if he plays without caring too much - it could free him up.

I think the reason he has asked for a Monday start is simply because he is practising on clay until Friday and the later start gives him a little more time to get practice on the court and a different surface, nothing to do with whether he wants to win or not. As Mark Petchey had said once he starts to play a tournament he wants to win, he hates losing.

I was thinking the same thing actually. If he goes in with that kind of mindset of half caring, it might be fascinating to watch. I gues he would be equally thrilled and frustrated if he were to reach the final, although if he did make it to Sunday, he probably would like to win it then.

Well if he is playing Monday, Wednesday, Friday then
A) he better win Wednesday as its my birthday (and the other days of course)
B)Friday night would be nice as I'll be there otherwise I'd be following it travelling.

I do think the ' play and see what happens' approach may help him, no pressure just go for it- and playing on clay will have helped his groundstrokes.
Here to a fabulous fortnight!
