Andy at Washington

Quote

I watched the match and just imagine it was not like he could just go to bed, he had the press, then the ice bath and so on, he probably did not get to bed till 6 am.  It's no surprise that he withdrew.  I haven't read anything about Toronto, but I know he had a wildcard for that tourney.

Very concerning if he has pulled out of Canada. That suggests that all is not well.

From the man himself.

Absolutely, shocked to hear what the tournament director said.Andy has never withdrawn from a tournament without reason.Tosay he is not a good example to the younger players is disgraceful. He is the one you should have thought knowing that Andy has just comeback from a major injury.Obviousely, does not play teniis or at midnight to 3 in the morning.Sorry, he shoukd not be a tournament director saying things like that.we will look forward to see andy at cinic.

As I said elsewhere,  "cautious optimism" is required at this stage. He looked really crocked after the Copil match. As for the tournament director, well better stop now   ranting

They would not dare have said something like this about Federer or the others. They know it was wrong start a match that late. I thought the ATP were stopping this a few years ago after the debacle on clay. Money is all that really matters to .them. Andy is no different to the other players who have returned from injury. He needs to take care of his body. Luckily I don't think he has any mental problems.

Andy was quite right to withdraw.  To me that made him a perfect example to younger players.  Apart from the obvious reason that he is still recovering, these tour directors are never going to look at their awful scheduling plans if players just carry on.    The less experienced players are under more pressure to keep playing to finance their team etc and move up the rankings.  If the big names who are usually on later and bring in the crowds all pulled out after late matches they might consider doing something about it.

Whilst my sympathies are with Andy I hate players knocking out others then withdrawing from a tournament. I think that they should re-instate the loser if they can like the lucky loser option for qualifiers earlier. I also think Andy is right to choose not to continue but he has to accept that he was a player ranked 838 at entry and his path is not as easy from there as he may have found previously when a top ranked player. Consequently he has to be more considered in criticism of the organisers. However they might have done a 'Serena' for Andy and avoided this happening? I expected him to win three rounds so why didn't they think that too?

My personal view is that this is all to do with the shambolic organisation of tennis at high level.

If they look at scheduling a little more sensibly this could be made less likely to happen. Most events are scheduled to take a week but with earlier qualification rounds. A week works well for a 32 draw but not for 64. With the larger draw there is an opportunity to do both qualification and first round matches a little earlier. The round of 64 should be completed on the previous Saturday and Sunday. Qualification matches then to be held on Wednesday to Friday.  That would then give adequate time to schedule the main rounds.  Those players involved in the early stages are usually not playing in the later matches of the previous event so usually are available to play? If one was playing above his level at the end of the week then you must also have a process to accommodate them.

I am sure that some of you will tear this idea apart but some more thought is needed to avoid this problem for players of inadequate time to schedule matches with recovery time between. I went to bed one night with Rubin playing Isner and surfaced to find that he won but had same day then lost to Rublev!  I feel more for him. Although Andy had more time his particular situation clearly meant he needed even more?

I am looking forward to Cinncinnati. He has been a finalist three times winning it twice so perhaps he will with the extra rest be in a good place to do another three rounds and gain more spaces on the rankings ladder. He needs to get where he is seeded in a  tournament and misses the early round in 2019.  Cinnci has only eight byes and, I think, no qualification event but still has too many matches in a single week.

I think the problem arose because they did not play at 11am 2pm is too late.Who ever organised this event needs to think what they have done.look at anderson at wimbledon that needs changing and I think it will. These guys are not super human there should be a complete days rest. Hotw on eartih can they go on to the next tournament and play to there potential there are human beings conssideration should be given,

       1) A good idea 2) Yes, scheduling is all too often shambolic.

Problem would be the loser would have left onto the next event. The players do not stick around.once they have lost they check out and onwards.

^ That is a possible issue but if they knew it could happen then they might adjust their rapid departure?  Do I remember a late notified lucky loser driving many hundreds of miles to come back and then going through a number of rounds? It is something in my head where the detail has been forgotten!

You're right MA but I can't recall the details.    Did his gran come along to watch?    It was fairly recent.   Was it the French Open?    If the loser is still around they could be given the opportunity to play - otherwise a w/o.
