(in Pete's case, he actually ended up showing a lot of emotion after he found out Tim's brain tumour and a couple of other times)
What's this?!

Yeah..I was confused too, but I think she's referring to Tim Gullickson who was Sampras' coach.

Ah right. Yes that would make sense. Just had a google. That's so sad.

From Wiki...
"Sampras won the first of his two Australian Open titles in 1994, defeating American Todd Martin in the final. In 1995, Sampras experienced one of the most emotional matches of his career, when he played Courier in the quarterfinals. Sampras's longtime coach and close friend, Tim Gullikson, had mysteriously collapsed during the tournament and was forced to return to the United States. Gullikson was later diagnosed with brain cancer to which he succumbed the following year. Saddened by Gullikson's illness, Sampras began visibly weeping during the match, but managed to win. He lost the final to Agassi. Paul Annacone took over as Sampras's full-time coach after Gullikson's illness made it impossible for him to continue coaching"
I really believe he'd have won the final had it not been for Tim's condition as he had to fly out the next day. They were extremely close friends and that was the first time Pete was experiencing a very personal death. My dad allowed me to watch the match wee hours in the morning and I can tell you that, Pete did stop crying at some point but I continued to cry like a baby the whole time. And the match was also very long and grueling. Jim didn’t give Pete even an inch in that match but he did feel a lot for him.
I was emotionally incredibly attached to Pete I won't hide it.

I had a quick glance through the last few pages on this thread and realised quite quickly why I hardly ever come on here any more. No point spending your time fixating on the morons in the UK press. Nice weather today at Wimbledon and some good tennis. All the more enjoyable when you just watch what is going on and ignore all the inane chatter behind the scenes.
Looking forward to seeing Andy tomorrow. Love the way everyone is hyping up how mega hard his draw is. When that happens he usually goes on to reach the final. Here's hoping

Thanks, Scot for this incredible clip. Made me all emotional all over again so couldn't finish watching. What's more emotional is that both my dad and my brother were still alive. I am so thankful to Pete. He kept my alive during my darkest times. Amazing what love can do to you and at times, you don’t even have to know the person. Love is so incredibly powerful. No wonder why the call it also the most mysterious one.

Thanks for posting that.....I can never see it enough. Courier told Pete "We can do this on another day Pete", and I believe that Pete took that as a little sarcasm and decided that no way was he going to let it go another day. I also believe he did it for Tim who was like family to him.

I didn't think Courier was sarcastic at all. He was trying to make Pete smile, take it easy etc., because Pete was clearly having trouble controlling his emotion. He'd been crying for a while after all. He finally broke down after one spectator told him, "do it for your coach, Pete". Anyway, he wasn't going to stop playing, because after losing the first two sets, he was getting a much better control of himself and was controlling the match. But more importantly, I didn't think he wanted to be alone. He did dedicate the whole tournament to Tim later in the final after he lost to Agassi. Tim died the following year and Paul then took place of Tim's place. These two then formed another friendship for life. I'd say Pete was extremely good at selecting his coach. His mentors were all very wise people starting from Fischer, who pretty much modified Pete's game to the right one that suited Pete's style and health condition the most, followed by Lendl himself the great, Tim Gullikson and finally Paul Annacone.
Here's a picture of Tim followed by Pete carrying Tim's caskets.
Here's another match that I thought was so memorable. The final TB has to be one of the greatest of all. I watched this one live too and unless you did, you would never get the true gist of it. Sheer quality, so much drama and so much pressure on Pete. If he were to lose, he would have gone out that year Slamless along with his number one ranking and year at number one that Federer has yet to break. There was so much at stake and it consequently built so much pressure. It gets really interesting from 5:00 where the TB was 6-5 Corretja. And here's the big difference. Pete was facing a match point and yet he held on - even served an ace after missing the 1st serve. Alex then went on to double fault to finish the match. I totally thought that defined the match (and the moment) right there, as to where Pete was in terms of mental strength and the champion he was. I was extremely happy for Pete though extremely worried as it was only the QTR final match, but at the same time, I felt so much for Corretja. What a nice guy he was and I am so glad that he was our Andy's coach for a while. Quite ironically those who didn't like Pete around that time (well, I'd say mostly Agassi fans lol) accused Pete faking the whole vomiting thing. That's when I lost a lot of faith in people. As you can see, Andy is not alone in this. Anyway, I hope our Andy will go and create moments like these in the future. And I really think him winning his 1st Slam will probably top it all - everything in tennis history. Hear, hear!
Sorry guys with the Pete stuff but I did touch Andy a bit too...at the end.
