For whatever reason, and his right shoulder is heavily strapped, JJ didn't serve nearly as well against Meltzer as he did against Amalgro. Andy's ROS is up there with the best, so fingers crossed.
If they get there of course. One match at a time.
Am very impressed with JJ's movement though. It's terrific for such a big guy. Helps he's so skinny, I think.

Janowicz had 16 Aces against Melzer over a 5 set match. First serve in was 57% and won 80% of them. Winners 54 while Melzer had 57. Keep in mind that Melzer had 5 less Aces than JJ, so clearly he was the more aggressive player of the two. Janowicz also had 26 unforced errors as opposed to Melzer's 19. Melzer also had a better 2nd serve % win. What went against Melzer was that he was only able to convert 3 of 12 break points. This means JJ was able to serve better in key situations and that basically helped him win the match. Otherwise Melzer had the upper hand on most accounts.

Andy is the better mover and a great returner compared to Melzer and certainly better than JJ. His 1st serve is also a big weapon. These will be the key in that match should they both advance. Andy will have to take all his chances on JJ's 2nd serve but I feel he'll be able to take a stab at his 1st as well. Andy, in fact, is a better returner on the 1st. And there are other elements like, very big occasion for JJ, crowd support for Andy etc. and Janowicz being tired since he has not come this far in any Major so some of his game and physical aspects should be well compromised. Unless of course he's blind to all that or unaware, there shouldn't be any critical problem. He should be hot and heavy at least for a set and half, but after that, Andy will have him on the ropes. Andy has enormous experience playing in Majors against the top guys and beating on a few occasions. And these two have played very recently so no tricky opponent for Andy. In an ideal world, Andy should prevail on all accounts and he will.

Some very well made points EJ. Having seen some of JJ/Melzer, and also based on how well Andy is playing, I'm less anxious about JJ than I was. Andy is vastly more experienced and I'm sure he will come through.

After the Almagro match I was about to wish to ban such players like JJ from any tournament. When he played Melzer, I got the confidence back that his serves are returnable to a certain extent. And who else can do that better than Andy! So I completely share your feelings in that respect. Surprisingly, Melzer said in a post-match interview that he would see Kubot as the winner.

Same here, just look at Noles route to the final, Berdych #7; then Ferrer #4 or Del Potro #8 who incidentally has also not dropped a set so far! All three opponents’ have been to grand slam finals in the past, so they know they can do it.

Andy has to get passed two players that are unseeded and/or one ranked #24, only Verdasco has been this far in a Grand Slam before. He got to the SF at Aus Open 2009, but was top 15 then.

JJ is a good server, but he is highly inconsistent. When he's on, he's great, but when he's not, he's poor. Almagro match demonstrated what he can do when serving great, Melzer match demonstrated what happens when not serving so great.

His second serve kicker is good, but with Andy on the other side of the net, it will have to be very good to trouble him.

Also JJ is inconsistent with other aspects of his game, his forehand can be very good at times, and average others. His drop shots are more often than not great, but given how fast Andy gets on to a drop shot, it might not be the best tactic for JJ to use.

If JJ wants to have any chance of winning he needs to get a consistent 1st serve percentage, and ballbash like he's never ballbashed before.

Yeah but to be fair, a serve is just about all Ivo has, Janowicz has a bit more to his game, but Andy has a good record against most of the tall big serving guys, he practically owns Isner, if he does meet Janowicz in the semis, i hope for another Raonic style USO performance.

I am not very sure about that because Kubot is not only ranked 130 but he's also your out and out clay courter. He's lucky to be here frankly but I don't want to take anything away from him however. It is what it is. I can think of only one reason as to why Melzer would think that. He's done JJ good and took too much out of him. He must have noticed that towards the end of the match and also, JJ's serves weren't as effective overall and his movement was getting slower as the match progressed. I thought he was giving his all to win that match against Melzer. So let's see if he's right.
