Andy to wed Kim in 2013

Quote

Long-term relationships seem to be the norm with the Top Four.   Andy and Kim have been with each other for 6 years, Novak and Jelena Ristic for 7, Rafa and Xisca Perello, 7 (assuming they still are together), and of course Roger and Mirka enjoyed a 9 year relationship before they married when Mirka got pregnant.

That's very true Aileen-I remember reading an article on them a while back, and I can't remember exactly what it said, but basically it was saying that Andy Roddick marrying Brooklyn while still in the midst of his tennis career was very much unusual and out of the norm, and that he was one of the only ones to do so,simply because the nature of their sport, and the incredibly long season means that many of the players-and the article wasn't even referring specifically to the Big Four with this,(although my guess is it can only be more difficult the more successful you are)-prefer to wait.

How lucky are the Big Four though, really! To all be with people who love them and are understanding of the commitments their careers demands-three of them even from when they were young and not the global superstars they are today.I was actually thinking about it recently watching Andy & Laura play in the mixed doubles, and the camera cut to Kim,and I realised that Andy & Kim had been together since Kim was younger than Laura is now! That's something really rare and wonderful.

And all their gfs are stunning-looking as well!  Mirka may not be as attractive looking - but beauty can often be only skin-deep.  Also she was a good player in her own right until injury cut her career short, so she knows what's involved.  Kim, as we know, is the daughter of a coach, but I don't know if either of the other two have connections with tennis.

I agree the nature of the sport must have a lot to do with it, and I'm sure if we hunted around other examples of long-term relations could be found.  I don't think Fed was intending to get married as soon as he did.  I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when Mirka broke that news to him!

There are some married players around - Jamie Murray for a start.  Baghdatis got married recently to former Croatian tennis player Karolina Sprem, and Davydenko has been married for six years now.  Also Tim Henman got married at the age of 25 to his long-term gf.

Agreed,Aileen,Kim,Xisca and Jelena are all very beautiful, and I actually think Mirka is quite pretty too-she's not model-standards stunning, but the thing is,for a normal lady she is pretty! It's just more of a case that the other 3 are unusually stunning, the lucky girls!

I don't know about Jelena's or Xisca's tennis connections, but Federer is very lucky to have someone who knows exactly what's involved.I do know Andy has said that he feels very lucky to have Kim,who understands the life and what's involved with the career. He's also said, though, that he's lucky she gets it as well as she does, because there are many people who grow up in her position who still don't get the life they have to lead,so he knows how fortunate he is.

Oh,I do know that some players do get married while playing, but it really struck me while reading that article that for most of them, especially the very successful ones, they really do seem to wait.I just hadn't realised how common it was,how high a percentage of them do it.It wasn't only about the players of today,it looked at some from older generations too.I wish I could remember where I read it-it was a very interesting read, actually!

I wonder what Andy got up to when he broke up with Kim, if she was his first and only girlfriend.  Think   I don't actually wish to know, I just hope it made him realise what he wanted, I do think these two are made for each other. Smile

It must be very difficult to remain in a relationship if the other person has nothing to do with tennis. I would imagine that is why most of the relationships have some part in tennis otherwise they would not last for any time. With Kim's dad a coach she must have met a lot of people in tennis and knows all the good and bad points in the life style. I think she knows all the problems that can occur in these relationships. Maybe that is why she does not travel all the time with Andy. As they say "absence makes the heart grow fonder".

I'm convinced Murray didn't date anyone in the break-up period.

They weren't apart for that long, remember.I remember reading an interview in which Andy was asked about it,and he said that while they had split up for a short while, they'd actually been back together for quite a long time before anyone in the media got wind of it.I also remember reading that Kim had had university exams not long after they split,so I'd guess they were what she focused on.And Andy is,as you say Teejay, pretty much always busy with his tennis!

As for Kim not travelling to every match-she does have her own life too!She has her painting that she does, she'd have friends, family, the dogs (I've always had dogs, and I can definitely say that owning one is a full-on commitment!)-she's her own person,as well as being Andy's partner.I mean, obviously Andy is a big part of her life, and supporting him is clearly important to her,but from stuff said over the years it's pretty clear that Kim has always wanted to have her own life too.Didn't Andy say in an interview at one point that Kim didn't just want to follow him around the place, she wanted to do her own stuff too? Can't remember his words, but I'm pretty sure that was his message!
