I was just thinking today watching Andy about the fact he is still wearing the ankle support from when he went over on it at Queens. Has anyone heard anything about the injury? i would have thought there is a danger of coming reliant on the support and the ankle will actually be weaker for it when he stops using the support, is it just because he hasnt had a chance to rest it sufficiently? Its just that a week afterwards he was able to play at wimbledon so i had presumed the ligament damage wasnt too severe, so im just wondering if anyone knows the state of play on that one! :?

I think i read somewhere that he'd gone over on that ankle a few times before Queen's and so, as its obviously a weak point the ankle brace is there as a precaution, although the injury has most likely healed completely. I also think I read he could play with it for the rest of his career...although my mind may be playing tricks on me.

I remeber that being said (although I think it was in an interview with Petch on Sky Sports. ) :?

It would be wise for Andy to wear it for matches, as once you've injured your ankle, it is weakened and susceptible to 'going over' again. If you notice someone who has 'gone over' a few times, a lump appears and one ankle looks larger than the other. Whether he can dispense of the support, is of course for the specialists.

Oh i didnt realise he had done it before, thanks, yeah he probably will have to wear it whenever he plays then because he must have lax and/or weak ligaments therefore preventing the joint being stable.

Me again, forgot what I was going to ask you david!! What is the 'lump' you refered to in your post? Ive just done a kinesiology module in my degree and we didn't have a mention of that so if you could fill me in that would be great, might make me sound clever when I get back to uni

What I heard is, that if you go over on your ankle many times, (say you're a racquet player) excessive scar tissue builds up on the ankle. I think it's there to 'protect' the weakened ankle. I think the tissue can build up if you do not treat an ankle injury, especially a sprain, the correct way. My left ankle looks almost twice as big as the left, but I walk and run quite normally.....

I think I have the same thing with my right knee David. I did something to it playing tennis and ever since there is some sort of lump, and I now always wear a knee support whenever I play tennis even though it no longers hurts and it's been 5 months.

At your age! Was it treated properly? That is SO important. That is why footballers are carried or helped off...then straight into the treatment room. I've even heard of people putting on 'Deap Heat' for an ankle strain! Andy should be ok with his ankle. I expect he has the best advice possible.

Yup David....Deap Heat is used very frequently. I've even had it at my age ...couple months ago i started playing tennis every day for a couple of hours with a exisitng injury in my ham-string...when it came to the quater finals of a tournament i had to use the stuff....oooo the smell it makes! it's horendous :? But it definitly helps, it's supposed to sooth the muscle and keep the warmth in!

I have had it a couple of times for a dead leg but I quite like the smell!! haha! the smell? i suppose you can't smell if it's on court and it's windy....but if you had it put on in a small changing room (like me) the smell is definitly horrible

David, I had it for 3months and hoped it would go away, then I went to see a doctor and I will be having it treated in November - hopefully no permanent damage

yeah top_spin you would have used deep heat on muscular injuries because that is what it is for! it isnt for damage to ligaments which happens during an ankle strain.
