Australian Open 2015 SF: Andy Murray vs. Tomas Berdych

Quote

It has been a long time, but we are back in the latter stages of the Australian Open with Andy, this being the second Slam semi-final he has reached since Wimbledon 2013.

In that semi-final he will face the man who acquired the help of Murray's ex assistant coach and hitting partner Dani Vallverdu and the conquror of Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, 7th seeded Tomas Berdych. Berdych is in blistering form, having lost only once this year so far in the final of Doha to David Ferrer. Berdych's most notable scalp this year under Vallverdu's watch is as mentioned already, Rafael Nadal, who Berdych beat for the first time in seven years 6-2 6-0 7-6 in the quater-finals of this very tournament. Not only was the result in itself shocking due to the past matches of Nadal-Berdych, but also the comprehensiveness of the match was a shock for most fans. However, Nadal hasn't played great so far this year so while the result was of a great shock, it shouldn't decrease Murray's chances in the semi-final, who has also put in five great performances at the Australian Open so far and is looking to continue his run to kick start his year in style.

Murray and Berdych have met ten times previously, most recently two years ago in Cincinnati shortly after Murray won Wimbledon. However, on that occasion Berdych won in straight sets. Berdych leads the H2H with Murray 6-4.

This match will take place on Day 11 (Thursday 29th January) of the Australian Open, second match during the night session on Rod Laver Arena, at approx. 8:30AM GMT.

Berdych leads the head to head but it's a little bit skewed by the results on clay where Berdych has won every match.

It'll be tough but it's winnable. Both of them are hitting the ball pretty well from what I've seen of Berdych. Every semi-final Murray has played in Australia has been a pretty hard slog and I expect this one to be the same.

I'll admit to a certain amount of nervousness given the H2H but we all know that Andy at his best is way better than Berdych at his best so I'll go for Andy in 4 using same tactics as today to keep the ball out of his hitting zone.  Could be a close one but the winner has 3 days before the Final to plenty of time to recover.

I expect it is going to be difficult for Andy, but then again Andy is more experienced on progressing to the final of a slam, compared to Berdych only doing it on the one occasion back at Wimbledon in 2010. Also Andy did do a pretty good job, playing differently to how he did in previous rounds so who knows Andy could surprise Berdych with his game plan.

I say if every aspect of his game is working well, then Andy in 4.

Now Andy's made the semis, this match will be live on the BBC so us lucky Brits get to watch a non stream for a change.

The H2H is rubbish. We all know the reason for the last two loses!

I'm not so much nervous about the next match as I am excited. The longer I watch Andy play, the more I'm convinced he's not the kind of race horse who jumps to the lead and wins going away as he is the kind who likes to run alongside his competition and tends to win the race by a nose. Sometimes he loses concentration and gets edged out. But he's just not the type that has the killer instinct; to jump on his opponent from the start and drive him into the ground. And that's okay with me. I think that's just a part of who he is and why he seems to be such a nice guy off court; the kind of guy you'd like to be your friend. I believe he's gonna beat Berdy but I'm not expecting a straight sets win and I'm not expecting a trouncing. That's generally not how Andy doe it. More than anything, I'm so happy that he seems to be playing pain free and physically feeling good. Compared to where we were last year, his good health fills my tennis heart with joy!!!

50/50 with Eurosport comms, I think.    This week I found myself longing for the silence of Dan Maskell interspersed with "Oh I say" when something exciting happened.   They don't half haver a load of s****e

The mind games have begun! Andy saying that Tomas is the slight favourite because Dani Vallverdu will help him find a good game plan. Hmmmm!

I subscribed to Eurosport Player just to catch the Aussie Open this month and for £5.99 for a 1 off subscription, it's a great deal. Having the SF and F on BBC will be a bonus though so I can record it.

The Eurosport Player app works great on my MacBook, iPhone and iPad. I was watching Andy's match against Sousa on the iPad and Smug Fed getting knocked out by Seppi simultaneously on the iPhone - gives you complete control what matches you want to watch. I'll be subscribing again for the US Open again.

I was thinking about Dani's role "in the enemy camp" but I do feel this is mind games by Andy. Really impressed by the composure of Andy today. He knew he was going to win and stuck to his plan and was not flustered much even in the tie break. He was a bit miffed a couple of times but generally very under control.

On Thursday he needs a good plan that involves playing his game not Berdy's. Not a match to sit way behind the baseline? I think that he is focussed enough so I am expecting him to win in four although if he plays well he should do it in three. It allows for a small hiccup. I hope to see it live as I have watched repeats so far and I think I miss the stressful nature of doing that live albeit that my heart might last longer?

Two way street - Andy knows Dani inside out, and they must've discussed Berdych many times. Amelie is the only new factor in the equation. And Andy has been consistently better than Berdych. Every reason to hope for a good outcome. Andy in 4.
