Australian Open R1: Andy Murray vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Quote

Another op isn't going to sort the problem out, just make his life easier and less painful, but with Andy you never can tall, although I suspect it's wishful thinking on his part.

absolutely but if he can play pain free then i don't think it matters much, he can adapt, as we saw tonight. he'd never be even close to 100% of course but a murray at 50% and not in pain is still better than most players. that said, i suspect you're right though i do wonder if his initial announcement was made on emotion, particularly after the drubbing by djokovic, and now he's having to walk it back a bit?

Andy really is from a different planet. He's been in major pain just putting his shoes on. If that was me I reckon I'd probably hardly leave the house, or even the couch. Meantime Andy goes five sets in a grand slam. Happy to truly amazed one last time - what a guy.

hug   We'll never see his like again Deb, and tennis will be a sadder place without him.

I'm thinking it's going to be an extremely hard decision whether to carry on until Wimbledon or retire now and have the op.

As has been said by many it has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to witness Andy's career and all he's achieved over the years.  Personally, I hope he takes all the determination he clearly still has and harnesses that into coaching.  I think he'd make an outstanding mentor for some lucky up and coming hopeful.

I agree with this, it was a bit strange to do this without an official retirement date yet.

May not have been official, but Andy did allude to the fact this might well be his last match.  He does wear his heart on his sleeve and sometimes it does him no favours.

A Murray coaster to end it all.
How could have been different?

What a legend!

Something tells me he is not completely finished.
But if this is it, thank you, for everything Andy Murray.

Thank you for everything, Andy.  I will never forget the exhilarating ride of supporting you through the highs and the lows.  I will miss you so much lovely man.  It may or may not be the end right now but I’ll just leave this here anyway.
