Australian Open R4: Andy Murray vs Mischa Zverev

Quote

Meh. I'd really hoped this would be the year when Andy would nail this tournie at last, But not to be.
[maybe the loss will be the catalyst for Andy to realise the importance of nurturing his own net game more in the future...]

Despite the disappointment, good to hear some measured comments by Andy coming out of his post match presser. He lives to fight another day. <zen>
And this was some of them -

""He deserved to win because he played great when he was down, and also in the important moments," said Murray.

"I was kind of behind in the last couple of sets the whole way but I have had tough losses in the past and I have come back from them."

Now that's what I call having a positive attitude.  Onwards and upwards!!

I'm convinced that there is more to this than meets the eye. Very similar to Wimby 2014 in terms of how flat and disinterested he looked.

Press conferences rarely tell you anything constructive. Just a series of sound bytes. Totally pointless.

Devastating to lose a match that noone really saw being a big issue, but the poor serving aside there was not an awful lot more he could have done against someone who produced the performance of his career like that. Watch him get dispatched in under an hour by Federer in the next round.

So gutting that it was one opportunity to finally get to the final and not have to play Djokovic. Difficult to see him getting a better chance to win the AO now so may have to accept it won't happen. Think it's going to be one last Federer-Nadal slam final now which will get a lot of people excited.

Disagree, though of course we'll never know the total ins and outs.
Here's the link to the presser for those interested http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2017-01-22/andy_murray_220117.html

To make someone sit down an hour or so after a tough loss and answer a load of questions is pointless. You aren't going to find out much, and you'll get the standard answers such as "my opponent deserved to win" etc.

The second serve also seems to have regressed.

Age had to start to come in to it at some point - this may be what is happening with Andy and Novak. More off-days creep in.
I dunno. Only Milos and Thiem are under 29 I think. All the others left in the draw are over.
I think Andy had an off day, MZ had an on day. All you can say really.

Andy has had too many of these "off days" in his career. It's probably what has cost him being an all time great. Shame really but there are days when he doesn't seem in it mentally, like it's just too much effort for him to bring himself to the level he needs.

Yeh I'm not saying older guys aren't competitive - they are, indeed currently they dominate. Just mean you may not get the considtency from top individuals in the slams at the level you used to with the big 4

He's had very few 'shock' defeats in slams since 2010. But for me the pity is he has not been able to bring his peak game to the table in quite a number of big 4 clashes. The two Wimbledon semis against Rafa are standout, along with 2 or 3 AO finals.

He's also been poor at the US open since he won it.

How can you say this, you have Abousltly no idea how Andy thinks or feels !! I'm sure he doesn't go into a match thinking this is just to much effort today !!! He always fights..... As someone said earlier it's his career and life, and who are we to say how he leads it .

Andy is an all time great without a doubt. His place in the hall of fame is assured.

It's frustrating that journeymen like Zverev redlines for 1 match in his life just as Rosol, Dustin Brown, Stakovhsky did and then proves they're just a 1 match wonder. Unfortunately it was against Andy.

Once the tour assesses how Mischa plays, every player will be on their guard and he won't be so fortunate next time.

Andy on the other hand just like Novak will be back. Just look at Nadal and Federer keeps on fighting to win just one more slam.

I used the word "seem". I'm not saying he deliberately does it, but it's a valid point for discussion. We have every right to discuss any aspect of Andy's game and attitude.

Just a shame that his slam count will count against him when all is said and done. He should be on 8-10 when you consider his talent and ability. The back surgery didn't help though.

Watching both Federer and Kei right now, they will absolutely demolish Zverev - look how both are so positive and aggressive with their play.
