31 year old Hanfmann who is currently ranked No. 56 has a career-high of No. 45 achieved in July.
He is known for his strong serve and a powerful forehand, which he often uses to dictate play and take control of rallies. His offensive game can be effective in putting his opponent on the back foot,
This season he's chalked up 43 wins from 50 matches, including semi-final appearances at the US Men's Clay Court Championships and the Mallorca Championships. He also reached the quarterfinals at the Italian Open and will enter this tournament on the back of a quarter-final finish at the European Open in Antwerp where he defeated Dominic Thiem in three in round 2 before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.
Hanfmann is also hearing-impaired, having been so since birth, but while he has to request chair umpires to speak more loudly, sees this as being an advantage as it helps him to focus better because he doesn't get distracted by noises round the court particularly when playing in a full stadium.
