Every win for Andy is a treasure now, he has to use all his smarts and focus as the young guys can go forever, and his serve has to be on, which isn’t always. Hope he gets rest as Korda will probably be his next opponent.

Not an easy match. But he showed immense resilience when facing BP and did a good job on returning. Yet, his trouble closing out sets is a concern.
Somehow I have the feeling he often runs into players in the early rounds who are then in an extraordinarily good shape, e. g. Safiullin, Karatsev, Hanfmann.

Excellent win considering how long it was for straight sets.

Most of the standards that we expect from Andy.  Difficulties with winning the first game of any match then failing to win sets when serving for them apparently prefering to break. He does seem to play his best when it is harder.

That is good today as it maintains his rankings points total and it give him a chance to play out against a likely better player in R2 when I expect him, like his opponent, to be play to a high standard. You never know he might play closer to the base line and not be drop shot beaten so much?

Well done Andy. I just do not know how you stay so fit to do so much ball chasing.

Thank you all so much for the comments—I wasn't able to watch (probably why Andy won!). He does seem to be having trouble closing sets out. But hey, he should have beaten Hanfmann in straight sets and he did. Go ANDY!

I was thinking the same thing as when I got to watch him he was up 4-2 in the first, then he lost serve and had to fight to win the first set..  I thought, turn it off, he does better without you nagging him.  But so happy to see him happy in his win.

Etcheverry up next having defeated Korda 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.  Andy beat him in IW this year so hopefully he can do it again. pray

Wow, I watched some of that match and saw that Etchverry had won the first set but was behind in the second set, but he came through. Here’s hoping Andy brings his A game.

Oh that a surprise I thought it would have been Korda, but glad it's not...I think. I wonder why Andy has difficulty in closing a set out, is it confidence or what as he was never like this in his early days.

I watched the Etcheverry match. I thought he was not a typical Argentine player. He is strong, aggressive and deserves his ranking. Whatever the result I expect Andy to play better than in R1. Korda was very patchy so it made the victory, despite the lost second set, a lot easier. Sir Andy, I think, will be a lot tougher on his opponent and himself when they play. I think he is looking for win number 499 on hard courts so some extra motivation than just to improve his ranking which was a target at this time.
