24 year old Etcheverry's current ranking is No. 32, highest No. 30 in June. The two played each other in round 1 of Indian Wells with Andy winning 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4. Etcheverry's ranking then was No. 61.
In April he reached his second final of the season at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, where he lost to Frances Tiafoe, then reached the final of the Primrose Challenger where he was defeated by Ugo Humbert, but this was enough to see him enter the top 50. At the French Open he reached the quarter-finals of a major for the first time defeating Jack Draper by retirement, Alex de Minaur, Borna Coric, and Yoshihito Nishioka without dropping a set, then exited to Alexander Zverev in four. At Wimbledon and the US Open he lost in round 2 to Stan Wawrinka in four on both occasions. At the Zhuhai Open he made the quarter-finals but lost in straight sets to Sebastian Korda, something he redressed in round 1 here when he defeated Korda 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, raising his game and playing more aggressively in the third set to do so. It also marked his first win over a higher-ranked player on hardcourts, and in fact only seven of his wins this season have been on that surface.
