BOSS Open F: Andy Murray vs Matteo Berrettini

Quote

This will be Andy's first tour-level singles final on grass since 2016 when he defeated Milos Raonic to lift the Wimbledon trophy.  In his on-court interview after his semi-final match, he said “It has been a long time since the last final [on grass].  A lot of ups and downs, but I kept going and kept working and finally managed to get to another one,  I am proud of the effort I have put in."

26 year old World No. 10  Matteo Berrettini, who is the defending champion (2019) and who had surgery on his right hand earlier in the season, also has a reason to be happy about getting to the final - "Arriving at the tournament, that was the goal [to reach the final].  From thinking about it and actually making it is a big difference.  I am happy I am here and have another chance to play another final after months without playing and after the first big surgery in my career.  This means this is my level and I have proved once again I am comfortable at this level and on this surface.  I really like it here at Stuttgart.”

The pair have met on two previous occasions, in round 2 of the China Open in 2019, with Andy winning 7-6(7-2), 7-6(9-7), and in round 2  at Queens last year, with Betterrini, who went on to win the tournament, prevailing 6-3, 6-3.  Andy though had just returned to the Tour after three months out with a groin injury.  At Wimbledon Berrettini  became the first Italian player, male or female, to contest a Wimbledon singles final.

Thank you for the intro Aileen.  Spot on the important facts as usual.

From seeing the Sonego match (who Andy plays in R1 Queens) Berrettini was nothing like the player that we saw win Queens. And then Andy is a very much better player than when they last met. He has the confidence and the nouse to choose how to win without needing the dash around the court. He knows how to dictate matches to avoid that. Mostly it works.

Consequently, I think that Andy will win this one.  I very much hope so. Unfortunately I will miss the match as we have a family lunch at 1.00pm. No doubt, as today, someone will add a link to a replay of at least highlights later in the day.

^ Well most of the pundits would agree with you and I'm not entirely convinced about Berrettini's own hype because he is after all coming back from a three month injury lay-off.

Rather than risk not having a stream on which to watch this match - I have no idea what happened because at lunchtime it was working perfectly, then two hours later it wasn't - I've taken out a month's sub to TennisTV.  £9.99 is a bit pricey for one match, but still!

This will come down to a few points here and there I reckon. I've not seen Berretini all week but he's had a pretty straightforward draw compared to Andy imo. Can't call it. Both love this surface.

My stepson has brought me down a belated birthday present from Scotland.

It is a teamug with a painted picture of Andy with a tennis racket so I now have him sitting on the mantelpiece. I hope that it brings good luck.

I think one of the main things I've seen in Andy's last few matches, not counting the one against Dennis Kudla at Surbiton (although even that wasn't as bad as it might have seemed, I thought it was significant that Andy himself clearly wasn't bothered about it), is that (a) he hasn't let himself get down in a hole—even when his serve's been broken he's worked hard to break back quickly, which is especially important in best-of-three matches—and (b), he's now simply becoming match-tough and getting back in the habit of winning rather than constantly being the underdog. It's not just that he personally believes he can ultimately win matches against top players again, which I think he has always done since he started trying to come back, it's that he KNOWS he can now. Which is massive in terms of how you approach matches mentally.

The bookies cant split these 2. Same odds on either to win.

Thanks Tamara.  That does clarify a few things for me anyway.

Both of these links tell me my iPhone has been hacked. So I will just watch the live scores and watch the highlights later. But thanks for the links. Must work differently in the US.
