Breaking Sad News: Andy Murray to retire at Wimbledon - AO last match?

moonglow I too have wondered that about Sasha Z.  Moreover Jez Green is part of the team and I seem to remember some people thought he'd not helped Andy's back with his training methods.  If I were SZ I'd think hard as to whether there are lessons to learn from what has happened to Andy.
I've a feeling Z won't let himself be pushed too hard by Jez, whereas Andy seemed to get satisfaction from being pushed to the limit because to him supreme fitness was everything, something I think he now regrets because it wouldn't have done his hip any good either.  As for Lendl, Z made his feelings very clear at the ATP finals - https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Tennis_Interviews/62897/zverev-if-you-have-strict-rules-with-me-relationship-will-finish-soon-/

From what AZ is saying it does sound as if he won't let himself be intimidated by Lendl (or Jez).  Andy is different to Z and so he allowed Lendl to "rule" him and so Andy worked too hard and trained too much and even when his hip was hurting he continued to work and then look what happened .......
I do wonder how wise it would be for Andy  to play at Wimbledon.  I think this might be too much really.
& tennis players are the actual people who play tennis week in and week out and so they should do what they think is right for themselves and not allow coaches, physios and trainers and their entourage to set sometimes impossible targets.  These people are on their side of course, but they also want the money following any win the tennis stars have.

Reminds me of  those who wrote on MW at start of 2017 that Lendl had pushed him way too hard during the off season after his amazing run at end of 2016.  Can't help but wonder where he'd be now had that not happened.   It may be he would have been able to continue managing his hip in the way he'd done up till then.  Instead he wrecked his body.  Of course Andy could have said no but he's his own worst enemy when it comes to working hard and a mindful coach would have said take a break and then would have gradually worked back up to the usual training schedule rather than go in even harder.

But no one on MW really has the knowledge of either Andy's hip condition or the details of Andy's training at that point, let alone who should be held most responsible for it.  I'm not sure it's fair to particularly assign blame to Lendl based on little scraps of info.

Yes well I suppose you're right, we don't have anything concrete to go on.  We probably shouldn't blame Lendl, we maybe are just looking for someone to blame because we don't really know what we're talking about ? Smile

I agree, but Andy did say after all the illness he had during the early months of 2017 - and before his hip flared up - that, in retrospect, he would have 'done things a little differently'.
