Breaking Sad News: Andy Murray to retire at Wimbledon - AO last match?

Quote

I'm just going to miss him so dreadfully. Don't take this the wrong way, but it feels a bit like somebody dying. I know he'll go on to have a great life and do lots of good interesting things, but this is so brutal and it feels sudden even though we've all been expecting it on some level.
I'm totally with you there Tamara.

Woke up to this news. We knew it was probably coming, but I’m gutted. More for him than anything else, because you could hear what tennis means to him.
I know I’ve probably been over critical of him sometimes but I do love the guy. My mum followed tennis since the 60s and thought she’d never see a British male Wimby champ. How pleased she was (and me).

Theres such a pain in my gut, a loss beyond belief to the tennis world. I am so grateful that Andy won those grand slams and especially Wimbledon twice. And winning two gold medals, he is a legend, not just in Britain but around the world. We need to write letters to the Tennis Hall of Fame as he deserves to be elected to it. I love you Andy, here’s to all the best to you, please stay in the tennis world in some way.

Stop Now! STOP NOW. You owe it yourself and your own health. Please retire immediately. Look to the future.

Did not expect to see this day come so soon. I'm so sad and shocked, but it is obviously the best option for his health.

Murray this year, and the rumours of Federer next year, with the Williams sisters possibly retiring too. Hard to see much of a promising future for tennis personally.

I'll miss these golden years of the sport and the many great years I've followed genuine sporting titans do battle. Players like Andy quitting is not just a short term impact I feel, its long term and its going to be hard felt for years to come.

I agree with Tamaragl that it feels like a death - to be slightly melodramatic.

Good luck Andy in everything you do, and hope to see you in the public eye more often than not.

I'm so sad right now... For him. For us.
I knew that this was coming but not like this.

I've had the news as I was on Instagram and saw the post from Kyrgios. Very nice post....

Thank you so much for that Tonedial. It was very hard to watch, but ultimately It must have been cathartic for Andy too.

On another note - how much weight must Kyle have on his shoulders now?

I really don’t know what to say. Started tearing up when I read the article as soon as I woke up and sobbing when I watched the interview. I came to Edinburgh last year for my final years of university and skipped watching the Wimbledon last time because Andy didn’t play. I was planning my Wimbledon trip this year for sure after my graduation show in London in July to watch him one last time because I just knew that it is now or never. I wish he is able to retire just the way he wants and I hope I can witness this because he is my hero. Our hero.

It is so painful to watch him talk about his struggles and love for the sport and I cannot begin to imagine how he feels. Whatever happens, I hope Andy is happy and healthy. He will be greatly missed.

I read this with a heavy heart, even though these last few days have given us enough signs of this decision.  He gave his recovery all he had, and whatever he decides to do next, he will put in the same effort.   I wish him success in  his future, but more importantly good health and happiness with his family.

Happy that he achieved everything someone in his position could ever hope for from their tennis career. Sad that it feels like it has ended way too soon. Frown
