Can Andy ever win a career Golden Grand Slam?

Quote

I really hope he can do it though I have to admit it's not easy. His performance in Rome semi 2011 is impressive and he has not got Lendl in his camp at that time. I am sure Lendl will make winning FO on Andy's to-do list  trophy

No. He simply isn't good enough on clay.

Playing on clay puts too much strain on his back and causes him problems. We know that this is due to his knee and that's not going to get better, so I don't see him ever winning the French Open. I'm quite satisfied with what he does on the other surfaces, so I hope he will be too!

Caz we don't know that Andy's back problem is anything to do with his knee. He has a back injury, that's all we know about it.

I didn't say that the back problem was 'caused by the knee', but we know that 'because' of the knee, he can't move on the clay in the same way as the other players and the way that he does move, puts extra strain on the back and  aggravates the problem!

First time Ive ever heard that its his knee that stops him moving properly on clay. Im pretty sure Andy has never said that. In fact he has said he thinks he can be a very good clay court player. And logically you would think the strain put on his knee on a clay court would be far less  than when he is on a hard court where there is very little "give".

The reason it is thought that his knee is troublesome on clay is that it first showed up while was playing for the first time on clay at the school in Spain.  I believe it was mentioned in his book.  He did not know that he had this patella problem until then.

See no real reason why not. If RG comes into focus as the missing piece I wouldn't rule it out at all.

He can win the Australian Open, definitely...the French will be a struggle though. It would probably require a massive improvement on clay alongside Nadal falling away.

I can imagine a scenario where Andy wins the Australian next year and all the talk before the French being about Andy's shot at the Golden Slam. Could also result in him playing some more clay tournaments...

A lot of people said Li Na could win any Slam except the French and look what happened. Draws open up, players fall, luck can be on your side....he might end up winning the French if his back allows him to.

Who'd have thought before last year's Olympics we'd be on the forum discussing a possible Golden Slam, with three of the five already in the bag?  terrific stuff!

Not you're biggest fan, but I do agree with this.

In Court Confidential Neil Harman says he always viewed Murray as a potential winner at RG, but he doesn't say what he bases that on!

The idea that someone who can take a set off Nadal 6-2 'simply isn't good enough on clay' strikes me as a little odd...Wink

2011 showed he's good enough, no question about it.  The only issue is confidence and health.

yes And almost won in the Rome Masters SF against Djoko. (Keeping in mind, 2011 was the Year Of The Djoker.)

I also believe Andy has the goods, but as you say, I also think down to confidence and health.

Know what?  I tend to agree.  Andy's 2011 Clay Court series was bloody well good.  If he can get to a FO semi, who's to say that he can't do so again, and go on even further?

Then I think of the stats, of no clay court tournament wins out of his 28.  Not even a final.  Then I start to doubt again.

Perhaps we will learn more in 2014.  Unfortunately, I guess Andy's clay court potential can't be re-assessed properly until then.
