Changes in Andy's team

Quote

he's just got engaged to the person who probably brings most balance to his life

Well said, my thoughts exactly.

Most of us thought that a change is necessary and not thinking about this option. The quote on Murray's website didn't feel close (anymore) for friends.. " I thank Jez and Dani for all their hard work over the years and wish them the best for the future". I always thought it is dangerous  to ask a friend as a coach  .

You can't go by that statement flowerpower because it's just an example of good old British politeness, especially as it was done through a third party.   Given how happy he looks in Manila though I don't think that this marks the end of their friendship, or if it does, then it's probably been coming for a long time now, so it could actually be a relief to him.  I seem to recall too that it was Dani who offered his services to Andy, not the other way round, and as far as I'm concerned Dani's been looking a bit like a sulky spoilt child for ages now, so if Amelie deprived him of the post he thought he should have had, well that's his problem.  Basically Andy doesn't need two coaches muddling his head how.  He's old enough and experienced enough to get along with one - although taking a coach on board for a while who could teach how to serve would be very useful. Whistle

Andy probably feels too that he's entered a new phase of his career now anyway, and when that happens change is going to be inevitable.  Sure, with change comes risk, but if we never took any risks in our lives how boring it would be.  Most of us have regrets and made mistakes, some of them very unfortunate ones, but better that than never to have lived at all.

Don't know how much to read into this, if anything at all..

RT @AndyMurrayFans: Hearing rumours that Loïc Courteau, former coach of Mauresmo - may be joining Team Murray.

Ooh, interesting.

Yeah, I agree.  Public statements are usually pretty formal.  I never expected any different.

Hmm, that is interesting.

Andy has always emphasized how differently national players are taught regarding their tennis skills. And the French bring a lot of flair to the court, according to him. Maybe with a French team around him something rubs off.

Well this is an interesting rumour because a little research tells me that Courteau is currently coaching Julien Benneteau.  Still, I agree that a bit of French flair might just be what Andy needs, so let's see what happens.

@Aileen, thanks for pointing out your view. You are right that official statements doesn't tell a lot about the real situation...

He'll need a hitting partner besides Mauresmo, so may be that's Courteau?

The problem with Courteau - if indeed he is in the frame - is that (a) would Benneteau be willing to part with him, assuming he is still his coach as the info I have is as of June this year, and (b) it brings up the matter of Andy having two coaches again as I can't see Courteau being content to be little more than a hitting partner.  On the other hand, he is aged 50, so might be quite glad to have a less onerous position - and at least if he formerly coached Amelie then I'd assume his thinking is along the same line as hers, so, in theory, there shouldn't be any conflict of ideas.

Is this a completely daft idea, could Ross Hutchins possibly have a role to play?

Don't think it would fit in alongside his new ATP job.

I agree Westie.  Also as he's newly married he might not be keen on being away from home for long periods of time.

On the subject of Andy's team and Mauresmo, andy was asked to respond to Henman's comments at his IPTL press conference. Dismisses the notion that she's the one who's made him play defensive. Link to article below.

Yeah saw that article also. So he's saying he ignored his coaches tactics??

Regardless.... Andy's OZ open performance will be the strongest indicator of how the relationship with Amelie has worked out. Time to physically prepare..mentally prepare..tactically prepare...injury free... so lets see...

Where does Andy actually say he ignored his coaches tactics?  The implication could certainly be said to be there when he says that Mauresmo was always telling him to play more aggressively, but adds  that "That’s the sort of mindset and style that I want to play,” which sounds like this is something he really wants to do but, for whatever reason, doesn't seem to have been able to do so on any kind of consistent level.

To me it's the whole difference between knowing what you want to do, and should be doing, and actually putting it into practice - something I know myself isn't always easy - so as far as I'm concerned it basically comes down to psychology.  Lendl had a good deal of success here, but whether Mauresmo can emulate it remains to be seen, so on that level perhaps we shouldn't be looking for any great improvement come the AO but at a slightly longer term, say, by the clay court season - and RG at the very latest.

I'm certainly prepared to give it the time it needs but I will be anxious the entire time to see some positive signs of confidence and consistency.  Just little hints that it's moving in the right direction.  There have already been flashes of it though so I'm not too worried at the moment.
