Doha Final: Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic

Quote

Andy had 8 aces to Novaks 2....

What does the number of aces have to do with it?

1st serve 60% AM 72% ND. Andy won 78% of 1st serves he got in which is good- he gets more 1st serves in he will win more points. He only won 47% of 2nd serve points though.
This has been something that's been said for seasons, he needs to improve his 2nd serve play but limit the openings there by having a higher 1st serve %

One positive is that he won't be the favourite at AO. Will take a bit of pressure and focus off him.

2016 played 5, won 2, lost 3.  Now Murray's finished getting over his injury and getting his confidence back, it's always going to be anyone's game between them (except on grass, where Djokovic might take his first set off Murray one of these days).

We'll see I guess. I thought that Rome and especially London were inexplicably bad performances from Djokovic, and didn't really suggest that Murray had made a breakthrough.

Well he's still just favourite at the bookies.

Well that's a shame. I feel Andy could've won that. His court position in the first set was rubbish tho., two miles behind the base line ain't gonna beat Nole Much better in the 2nd when he was more aggressive and then quite even in the 3rd until....His court position against Berd was so much better. Am beginning to feel Nole gives him the heeby jeebies.
Hope they really analyse that match.

Was a very good match, new year new start. Last year's run doesn't matter now. Andy has every chance in the world at Melbourne though this year he is neck to neck with. Novak now I feel.
Agree.  Let's get some perspective into this - Djoko defended his title while Andy gained 150 points by getting to the final (and don't forget that a year ago Djoko thrashed Nadal 6-1, 6-2), which increases his lead from 630 pts to 780.  Djoko still has his title to defend at the AO too.

Meanwhile I do wish they'd get on with the trophy ceremony!

I expect that to change. There won't be much in it though.

Andy won'd be favourite going in to AO but will been expected by most to reach the final. Djokovic with the wins he's had there will rightly be favourite.
Nishikori I'd put an outside bet on to throw a spanner in the works and make the final.

That means nothing if you have 8 aces in 8 games but chuck in a very poor service game each set, as Andy did. Better 2 aces and no very poor service games.

He was very tetchy this match, missing hugging his guru? And as for  the ball bouncing.... enough already!

Kind of new type of playing Djoko. More Murray like (dropshots, lobs) combing with his own play close to  the lines. His improvement since november is impressive. Glad Murray won the second set, so he could experience this play a bit more. A big smile at the net!

I would still put Andy favourite for the AO as well, if he is against Novak in the final sure I would put Novak as a bit of a favourite but on the flip side I think Novak is a lot more likely to stumble before the final than Andy is.

Always takes two to tango. Just as relevant to suggest that Murray had bad patches today and in Paris.  It's always going to play out like that between them from now on - if either of them isn't on top form, the other will win, and every once in a while we'll see matches that just come down to a couple of points.

It's a bloody brilliant rivalry to watch - and for a couple of years, that wasn't the case.  But you'll be waiting a long time for Djokovic to go on another 8 match winning streak...:-)
