Doha Final: Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic

Quote

Agree. Apart from the loss, obviously, Andy will be generally pleased with how he played today, especially as paradoxically his rankings lead has increased while Djokovic's has stood still.

What do you expect from Boogers the only time I have seen him post is when Andy loses.I really do not know why he is on MW. The only time I have seen him post was OMG when Andy beat Djokovic at the 02.

How about every time he plays on a Saturday or Sunday, and I have to write a report regardless of the result? Go away, you miserable ingrate.

Also in retrospect, I think Andy had the harder draw.  Djokovic was only really tested by Verdasco, and even he must know that it was only because Verdasco choked big time when he had those 5 MPs that he even got to the final.

I like Boogers, he says it as he sees it and sometimes acts as the voice of doom normally before Andy proves him wrong.  As far as I'm concerned he is a true fan of Andy and doesn't deserve all the stick he gets.

Sometimes, you can only be a "fan" if you never criticise Andy. It annoys me, because nobody is beyond criticism, even Andy. Everyone has a different approach to being a fan, but that's not always respected.

Could we really have expected that Andy will roll over any opponent while Djokovic is losing his former strenghts? It will always remain a difficult match-up for Andy, esp. at the AO, which Djokovic has dominated over the past years. Looking back at today's final, I must say that Andy was successful when he put Djokovic under pressure. Imo, he played a little tentatively when he had chances to break. All in all, there were only few, but in the end decisive differences in their performance.

One thing which has just struck me is that, given how poorly (by his standards) Djoko has played all tournament, the fact that he suddenly produced his best tennis for months could actually be a testimony to Andy because he knew he simply had to raise his level to have a chance of beating him?  I really do think that there is a lot of genuine mutual respect between the two of them, despite Djoko's usually unsubtle attempts to distract him and which unfortunately seem to work?

In days gone by Boogers was a lucky charm for Andy.  If Andy was losing Boogers would say he was going to lose and then Andy would win, so he would do it deliberately (in my opinion). He is a good guy and genuine fan and it genuinely does upset me at the flack he gets.   In your case, to be honest  I'm still to be convinced.

I'm still to be convinced about quite a few of them these days.  Maybe though boogers should have broken the New Year promise he made to be more positive about Andy on the match threads, then he might have won today!

It was a great match with hardly whisper between them . The only thing upsets me is that once again Djokovic gets away with hitting someone in the crowd. Lower ranked players would have been disqualified like Tim Henman was. This is at least three times he has got away with it and ever said he should have been disqualified at Roland Farris. One day someone will be brave enough to stick to the rules as Askeraki did in New York over Serena Williams. Nadal is another player who gets away with things he shouldn't. That umpire, Dumi something, accused Andy of hitting him deliberately when all he was doing was returning the ball to the other end. Are they a little bit 'scared' of some players or maybe the tourni organisers

It's perhaps a small thing, but I would also like to point out that when Andy shook hands with Djokovic at the end of the match, he (Andy) smiled and spoke in what looked to me a very cheerful, relaxed and not seriously upset or frustrated way. I think he felt he'd played well and taken Djokovic nearly as far as he could. I think he really respects Novak, antics or not. He knew he'd still be number 1 at the end of it  (and indeed as others have pointed out, he gained points on Novak because Novak was defending the title), and I'm also betting that he didn't want to leave absolutely everything out there for the very first tournament of the season, especially with the AO just round the corner. I think at this point Djokovic has at least as much to prove as Andy has and probably more.

Didn't Andy himself say his focus is the AO in his before match interview?

Something happened there. The last sentence in the quote was mine

Murray certainly has a wider repertoire than Djokovic and is arguably the better defender, but he lags slightly on the tactical and mental side of things, and often runs into trouble when he's forced to play aggressively. His serve and forehand are also at times liabilities. Of these, the mental aspect is the biggest problem and until he's able to sort that out he'll continue to be fractionally behind Djokovic.

Basically, my position is that you can't just take variety and technical ability in isolation.
I agree with this mostly. But of course  Andy's "wider repertoire" is one of the main reasons why he is my favourite tennis player.
His capacity to amaze continually amazes me. It's why we all get so frustrated on here isn't it? That his talent hasn't translated into more slams.

Tamila I agree it really does annoy  me that joker gets away with so much!!! In fact his antics now make him a very unlikable tennis player.

When Andy saved the 3 match points in the second set, he was so aggressive and went for it. What can be done so that he plays like this when he has break points? His conversion of break points in general has always been relatively poor when compared to the other elite players.

As for Novak's antics, it still is something that Andy needs to block out. His game disintegrated as soon as Novak started the "cramping." Sports psychologist?
