Davis Cup Qualifiers - GB vs Colombia

Quote

Andy isn't taking part because he's having a rest before doing a training block in Florida ahead of playing in Dubai at the end of February, but if anyone is interested in supporting other Brits playing some high altitude tennis in the Davis Cup Qualifiers, this tie will be held on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th February at the Pueblo Viejo Country Club just outside the capital Bogata, which is set in the mountains at 2,600m above sea level.  The matches will be on red clay courts.  Bogata is GMT-5.

The team who wins the tie will progress to the Davis Cup Finals group stages in September before the knock-out Finals in November.

You can watch live coverage on the BBC Sport website and via BBC iPlayer, which means that replays will be available. The tie starts at 8:00 pm GMT on Friday and will resume on Saturday at 5:00 pm GMT.  2 singles on Friday, and doubles and 2 singles on Saturday.

Great Britain -
Captain, Leon Smith
Cameron Norrie
Dan Evans
Jack Draper
Joe Salisbury
Neal Skupski

Colombia -
Captain, Alejandro Falla
Daniel Elahi Galan
Nicholas Mejia
Nicolas Barrientos
Juan-Sebastian Cabal
Robert Farah

Dan has been selected to play doubles for the first time in the DC, having complained in October that it was "a bit insulting" that he had never been picked in doubles, and threatened to never play again unless he was.

He'll open the tie on Friday in a singles match against the world No. 253 Nicolas Mejia, and then play alongside Neal Skupski in Saturday's doubles rubber.  Dan though did reach the finals in Miami and Monte Carlo in 2021 partnering Neal.

Cameron Norrie faces Nicolas Barrientos in Friday's other singles.  Barrientos is ranked 510 and is only playing because Colombia's No. 1, Daniel Elahi Galan, has been ruled out by injury.

Columbia take the first set 6-2.  I don't know if it's the court or the altitude but this is not one of Dan's better performances so far.

Dan finally finds his range and GB take the second 6-2.

Interesting arena though.  Glass sides with a convex slatted glass roof which seems to give you the impression that you're playing outdoors when you aren't,  A bit like playing in a glass house really.

Long service game at 4-3 but Dan avoids getting broken.  4-4

Cue for the Colombian drumming to get even louder.

Colombia hold to love with some great serving.  5-4

And Colombia take the set 6-4, largely thanks to 2 DFs from Dan - and Nicholas Mejia beats a top 100 player for the first time in his career, although I don't think Dan was too thrilled at his attempted ecstatic hug at the net!

Cam takes the first set 6-2.

5-5 in the 2nd and Cam gets the break, and takes the set 7-5.  yay

Dan & Neal take the first set 6-4. cmon yeah

Get the break in the 2nd and consoldidate to go 2-0 up.

5-3 to GB but Columbia hold.  5-4.

Neal serving.  Deuce, ad GB.

Deuce again and ad GB.

We get the ad again.  Neal's first serve is ruled out by the umpire, but his second is an ace. yay

So GB is 2-1 up!

Nice to see a few Brits among the spectators.  Presumably they live locally and didn't fly over 5,000 miles to watch this, although I'm sure I've seen the bearded gentleman covered in union jacks at other ties.

Hi Guys, I watched the doubles and am now into the Norrie match.

I thought that Dan was a revelation in the doubles. Their quality opposition seemed unable to cope with his style and Skupski excelled with his serve at critical times.

Even though Cam is a set up I still have everything crossed as playing at this altitude on clay in a mainly hard court period of ATP events makes life very hard for the Brits.

Nice to see you MA.  I was beginning to think nobody else was watching this!

As Leon Smith said earlier, this was the most complicated tie GB could have had, and I wouldn't disagree with him either!

Drat - Cam had MP on Mejia's serve but Mejia saves it.  5-4 GB.  Cam serving for the match now.

But Cam serves out to love. yay

GB have an unassailable lead, so no need for Dan to play again.

Onwards to September and hopefully at a much easier venue!
