The situation with match threads and subsequent disruption to the community has recently led to the moderation process coming under review.

MurraysWorld has a reputation of standing out from other fan sites due to our non-fanboy-like objectiveness and the respect for freedom of speech in our forum moderation. I’m sure most of us are proud of this and it’s important we stay true to those principles.

Criticism of Andy on this forum continues to be an acceptable form of contribution to discussion and debate but only if expressed in a respectful way. What we are now witnessing with greater frequency are criticisms of a derogatory nature. As a consequence, this understandably riles up other posters leading to match threads becoming an ugly place to be involved in.

The general moderation approach thus far has been to warn, temporarily ban and then permanently ban. This has been very effective against new members who sign up with the intention to break the rules. However, it is clear to most of us that this has been insufficient in keeping the peace on match threads.

Naturally we have felt resistance to permanently banning regular members from a community they have invested in and contributed to. We’ve also shown additional leniency due to recognition that match threads are often emotionally driven environments and have a tendency to bring out the worst in us. But this approach has ultimately led to the status quo, which now must be resolved.

Going forward, we will implement an incremental temporary ban approach. The ban length will double on every reoffence with 10 days being the minimum for most offences. We will be issuing these penalties without consideration of a member’s history and therefore you can expect to see an increase of enforcement. Permanent bans will continue to be issued but mainly for straightforward cases.

A reminder of the rules particularly relevant to match threads:

Personal Attacks: While debating and discussion is fine, we do not allow rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks.

Baiting: No baiting. Dropping things in the forums just to stir the waters will not be tolerated. For example, criticising Andy in a derogatory manner.

Venting: Regularly using this forum as a way of letting out pent up anger is inconsiderate, disrupts the community and causes the same result as trolling. Shout at your TV instead.

I hope by making everyone aware that we plan to tackle this problem, the community will adjust their behaviour accordingly. Please let’s work together and remove the need for moderation to be on the agenda at all.

Seriously, stop making me laugh - my tea is no longer in my mug!

On an actual serious note, this is good news - too many people have been driven away by the behaviour this policy is in place to prevent.

This is clearly Andy Murray's fault. I mean honestly, why can't the guy just bagel all his opponents and win every tournament he enters? would save us all so much trouble, and things like this wouldn't be necessary. We would all be happy then, even Boogers.

At last. I have only come on the site this afternoon, because I dreaded what would have been posted after Andy's loss. I for one was getting sick to death of the insults aimed at me and others So at least we won't have to put up with that or the horrible said and aimed at Andy. Thank you.

I'm pleased too. I stopped going on match threads because of the vitriol aimed at Andy.

Brill thanks Mark, I tend to avoid the match threads and then only read the final page when I know the result of the match - if i've not been lucky enough to actually watch it!
