Indian Wells R2: Andy Murray vs Andrey Rublev

Quote

The two have met twice before - in the 2nd round of the 2017 Australian Open, with Andy winning comfortably in straight sets, and round 2 of Rotterdam in 2021, which Rublev  won 7-5, 6-2.

26 year old Rublev started the season with a title winning run at the Hong Kong Open to claim his 15th career trophy, his unbeaten run coming to an end in quarter-finals of the Australian Open at the hands of Jannik Sinner.  Rublev then made the quarter-finals of his next two tournaments, Rotterdam and Doha.  He reached the semi-finals in Dubai where he was 5-6 down in the 3rd set against Alexander Bublik when he lost his temper with a lineswoman, allegedly by screaming abuse at her in Russian, something Rublev vehemently denies.  The result was disqualification, although on appeal he was allowed to keep his prize money and ranking points, but was fined for $36,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Rublev's playing style is characterized by his aggressive and powerful baseline game, complemented by his solid net play and consistent serving. He has no preferred court surface.

Andy is hoping that the court conditions, which he says are 'significantly faster' than they've ever been before, will be to his advantage.

Kerber just tied the sets against Ostapenko on court 2 so Andy will have to wait a bit longer. Hope Kerber wins, Ostapenko is still just the brattiest ever... even if she can hit the ball a million miles an hour.

Thanks Tamara.  Was hoping this match wouldn't go to a third.  Can't be bothered with Ostapenko either.

And Kerber did win, hooray, and looked SO happy to be coming back. Good for her.

So far so good! Andy just has to keep the ball aimed at Rublev's backhand and stay away from the lethal forehand...

3-2 Andy had two BPs but couldn't take either of them, but follows with a hold to love.  4-3.

Excellent serve game! I say it every time, but a decent first-serve percentage makes all the difference to Andy's game. Less panic, less defence, less scrambling.

Winning that game and the set was crucial.  Now Rublev can start to believe again.

I wanted Andy to polish off that set. I've gone off Rublev a bit this week.
