Glad I chickened out of this one Wink
But a wins a win, as they say yay

Wish I had - it was stressful and I had bad vibes about this one. If ever Simon had a chance to reduce the H2H deficit it was in a clay court match. He screwed it up again. He must feel lousy being one of the few players who can't beat Murray on clay. Hopefully this will give our lad confidence. Really very glad he got his No 2 ranking back by virtue of his own performance, not just Kei's. The extra points Kei has gifted him are very welcome though.

I was beginning to think I'd stayed up for nothing.  Glad I watched the Politician's Husband and missed the first set.  In the end I got the best of both.

After first set I did wonder about going to bed as it was just too depressing to watch Andy so flat and out of it.  But I stuck with it and I was glad I did because in among the dross there were some amazing pearls of shots that just left you gasping.  Towards the end part of me was thinking it doesn't really matter who wins as the real winner will be birdy fast asleep but I didn't want Andy to let Gilles think he's finally got the better of him so when Andy let match points come and go I was swearing at tv and hoping wouldn't wake the neighbours.
Got really irritated with Petch who started talking as if it was all over bar the shouting when he broke Gilles in 3rd set - is anything ever that straightforward with our Andy?
Anyway, somehow Andy managed to find his energy, his desire to win and some of his shot-making and did it - so well done.  And has already been pointed out he sure has got plenty of match practice here in Madrid having played only 2 matches.
I hope that hip isn't going to be too much of a problem for him - clearly something not right there.
Had to laugh at his response to questioning about Fergie - at first I thought he was going to tell Marcus to get lost and let him go but then he was funny about F's enjoyment of the free wine.

What seems wrong with his hip? Has he had problems with it before?

It's not clear Masaka but he was clutching it and grimacing in his first match and was clutching it yesterday.  I'm not sure it's the hip as such and could well be related to the back - I say that because I've developed a pain in what looks like the same place and it is related to my back problem.  Funnily enough the pain came on after watching Andy on Tuesday,  I think I was sitting badly or something and sitting for too long watching tennis that day.  Anyway I call it my Andy-related injury   Whistle

I doubt it.  And this is what annoys me so much.  Such disrespect for others.
Actually, I was being sarcastic.  a knackered off-form Andy after a late night ain't gonna distress Birdy. Maybe he'll get complacent though...

I just found out the score of this match. Was shocked that Andy lost the first set like that. And then I reconsidered....actually, it isnt that shocking also. Smile

I'm sure the TB in the third set would have been tough, didnt expect it to go till there.
Can someone please post this match? I really appreciate it. Smile

Don't think Andy ever shows signs of aches and pains when he's winning, just when he's losing!

True but at least Andy got there anyway without the extra gifted points.  I wasn't sure at all about Andy on this match so did think he would need to take it to 3 sets.  I nearly gave up at 6-2, 0-2 down but stuck with it (albeit on the iPod Touch App) to the end.  Many of the rallies must have been long and hard-going as it seemed to take ages to update.  Glad he got one better that a R16 match last year but not at all sure about the Berdych one - heart says Andy in 3 but head says Berdych in 2..  Frown

I wondered when someone would do this line, which is why I mentioned it on the quarter final thread.

Andy was reaching for his hip on and off throughout the match last night, even when he was playing his best stuff. He also did it against Mayer and, despite the close scoreline, Andy was in no danger of losing at any point.

I just think it's too easy to always assume Andy is using a kneejerk reaction to being in a tight situation. It isn't always the case, in fact I would say it is rarely, if ever, the case. None of us can see inside the bloke to know what injuries/niggles, he might have.

I wondered last year if it was his hip he had injured, not his back as such. As I understand it some hip injuries can cause back pain, but obviously we don't know what he has done. In my view something isn't quite right. I'm not saying it had a bearing on last night, or that it will be a factor today as such, but let's not dismiss it as being Andy effectively playing possum without some proof.

Ruthie, like you I got annoyed with Petch at that point, and once or twice throughout the match to be honest. Early on he seemed to write Andy off. Then, when Andy looked better, he did a swift about turn and assumed Andy had got it. Then again, I still think Petch has got PMT this week, so I'm not taking too much notice of him lol.

I'm still stunned that Leif Shiras said the courts are being cared for with Nadal in mind. He really doesn't say Whistle.
