The two previously met at the beginning of February in R1 of the Open 13 Provence in Marseille with Machac winning 7-5, 6-4.

23 year old Tomas Machac is currently ranked No. 55.  After Marseille Machac qualified for Dubai then went out in R1 to Alexander Bublik in three.  Indian Wells he defeated Stan Wawrinka in R1, then lost to Adrian Mannarino.  In R2 here he caused an upset by beating the 5th seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4.
