2nd set de Minaur 6-3.

DM pllayed very well throughout.  Not sure what Andy was doing but didn't seem to be there for the 1st set.  Seemed to find some oomph in the second, but too little too late.

Happy to have missed, nearly the whole match. I switched in at 4:2 when Andy had a tiny chance of a BP. What I saw were errors over errors and Alex deM. playing his game: holding the ball in play. My comm emphasized though that Andy had only played four matches on clay after the hip surgery.

On the strength of today's woeful and demoralising performance, Andy will now, along with his team, consider the option of skipping the rest of the clay court season.  If he does though then, according to ATP rules, he won't be able to play any other tournaments, which would scupper his main goal of being seeded at Wimbledon.

A couple of thoughts about the match. First of all, Andy hasn't played nearly enough matches on clay to be a contender. His first serve wasn't working for the entire first set, and I think it's crucial to his game. As soon as his first serve starts working, he's in it and his confidence goes up hugely. And I think de Minaur is a terrible matchup for him, especially on clay—he's got a rather similar game to Andy's own, he's very athletic and an absolute backboard when it comes to keeping the ball in play. He can outlast him in long rallies on slow courts, and considering the other points I've just mentioned, that spells trouble for Andy. And it did. I really wasn't surprised. I do believe that if he can play some matches he could recover some form on clay. But it would be hard work.

Thanks Tamara.  I wasn't all that surprised either given that de Minaur had already beaten him twice on hard courts.  Also of his 46 titles only 3 of those have been on clay, and that was in 2015/2016 when he was at the height of his game. I'm not convinced either that given all the sliding around that goes on on clay that it's the best thing for him to be doing if he wants to preserve the life of his resurfaced hip.
