Montreal R1: Andy Murray vs Taylor Fritz

There's just nothing left in his game at all. Its about as weapon less as it could possibly be. Just nothing to hurt any half decent player playing an average level.

he can no longer resist opponents and grind them down like before. We've seen him try to go aggressive but he cannot sustain it, and his serve has slowly but surely gone away completely

A comeback seems improbable.

He just cannot get past Fritz, who hits winners at will, even to fend off the only BP. Frustrating.

Another racket smash as Fritz seals the match

In fact, he wiped the floor with Andy.

So sorry Andy lost, wish I could have watched and rooted for him.

There will never be another Andy Murray it is just a shame to see his performances look so unrecognisable to what we have been accustomed to see over the years. If only 2017 and his hip didn't break down who knows what could have been.. I get the feeling he will be doing alot of soul searching tonight.

I cannot compare the Andy of 2022 with the Andy in his prime. He is a top 50 player, not more, not less. Sometimes he wins against some really good players (like in Stuttgart), sometimes he loses against them (like yesterday). And sometimes I expect him to defeat opponents (like T. Daniel, M. Ymer etc), which did not happen for one or the other reason.
Fritz dominated Andy from start to finish. He could not match him in power, pace, precision, consistency. So far the US- season has not shown any upward movement, in my eyes.

So disappointed to see the score and to read the comments on here and reports elsewhere.  The fact that Fritz won doesn't really surprise me but I had hoped that Andy would turn in a better performance than he did.

I think we are finally aware of his level post surgery. It's roughly top 40 (maybe 30) over the course of a season. He doesn't have the consistency or staying power anymore to get any higher. Worryingly, he's massively underperformed on hard courts this year, with exception of Sydney.
The question is - is he happy with this level? I have his form as very mediocre since Stuttgart final. I'm concerned that his improvement was due to a sustained rest and lots of practice, but after a long run of matches his body has started to break down and his form has suffered. The aspcects of his game which looked to be improving have again regressed.
There is all this talk of another deep run at a GS, but GS's are the least likely tournaments to yield success for him now, look at his masters performances over the past couple of years. His best best is another good run at a 250 or maybe a 500.

This result make me feel sad for him. He wanted to bring himself in the best position for the USopen. This must be so disappointing for him.

It’s hard to watch Andy struggle. The mum in me wants to say “go home to your family, move on.”  However, I don’t have a competitive bone in my body so it’s hard to understand what drives him to keep going.  At the very least he will know that he has given his comeback his best shot.  He may surprise us all, even yet.

I'm also worried by the lack of clarity around his coaching situation. I'm not even sure who his core team are anymore. I'm sure he knows what's best for him though, so I don't want to sound like an expert. But I do think it's a bit vague in comparison to times of old.

I agree with you on that!  Back in March we were told he was having a reunion with Lendl - and since then total silence.  Most of the time I don't even recognise the people in his box, although Lendl did at least turn up at Wimbledon.
