24 year old Taylor Fritz, ranked No. 13, is the current top-ranked American.
At this year's Australian Open he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, but lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets. He then reached the quarter-finals of the Dallas Open. After that he lost in the second round of the Mexican Open but rebounded by winning the biggest title of his career at Indian Wells, defeating Nadal in the final and snapping his 20 match winning streak. He then lost in the fourth round of the Miami Open. A foot injury caused him to play a curtailed clay season, which he concluded with a second round exit from the French Open. During the grass-court swing he won his second title of the year at the Eastbourne International and then bettered his previous Grand Slam performance by reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, going down to Nadal in a five-set thriller. Due to a recurrence of his foot injury he didn't compete again until the Citi Open last week but the punishingly hot and humid conditions forced him to retire at 1-4 down in the 3rd set in his round 3 match against Dan Evans. He has played once in Montreal before this, losing in the first round in 2019, while his other two appearances in Toronto also brought first-round losses.
Fritz possesses a dominant serve and solid groundstrokes off both wings. One of his defining strengths is his ability to hit sharp angle cross-court shots on both the backhand and forehand sides. He also has a good topspin lob.The match is scheduled for today not before 7 pm BST.
After a weekend of high temperatures the weather is forecast to be warm and cloudy with the possibility of thunderstorms.
